DEFCON (video Game)
''DEFCON'' (stylised as ''DEFCOИ'' and sometimes subtitled ''Everybody Dies'' in the North American version and ''Global Thermonuclear War'' in the European version) is a real-time strategy game created by independent British game developer Introversion Software. The gameplay is a simulation of a global nuclear war, with the game's screen reminiscent of the "big boards" that visually represented Nuclear warfare, thermonuclear war in films such as ''Dr. Strangelove'', ''Fail-Safe (1964 film), Fail-Safe'', and especially ''WarGames''. The game has been available by download since September 29, 2006 through Introversion's web store and Steam (service), Steam. On 5 April 2007, publisher Encore announced they would be publishing the game in the United States, and had ordered an initial 50,000 copies of the game for retail. Introversion Software Limited is a British video game developer based in Walton-on-Thames, England. History The company was founded in 2001 by three friends, Chris Delay, Mark Morris, and Thomas Arundel, who met as undergraduates at Imperial College London. The company originally labelled itself "the last of the bedroom programmers" due to the trio working out of their homes – they moved into an office when working on their fourth game, ''Multiwinia''. Their first released video game, ''Uplink (video game), Uplink'', was programmed and designed almost exclusively by Chris, while Mark and Tom handled marketing, materials and the other business elements. Their small initial investment enabled them to buy CD-Rs and ink cartridge, printer cartridges. Early copies of the game were handmade. Metacritic is an American website that aggregates reviews of films, television shows, music albums, video games, and formerly books. For each product, the scores from each review are averaged (a weighted average). A boss key, or boss button, is a special keyboard shortcut used in PC games or other programs to hide the program quickly, possibly displaying a special screen that appears to be a normal productivity program (such as a spreadsheet application). One of the earliest implementations was by Friendlyware, a suite of entertainment and general interest programs written in BASIC and sold with the original IBM AT and XT computers from 1982 to 1985.
