DDO 187
UGC 9128 is a dwarf irregular galaxy around 6.8–7.8 Mly (2.1–2.4 Mpc) away; it is thought to be in the Local Group, although its membership is not certain. The galaxy has a mass of about , around 100 million stars, and a diameter of around 3300 ly. It is therefore quite faint, and so was only discovered in the 20th century. UGC 9128 is around 2.7 Mly from GR 8, which is its nearest neighbour. UGC 9128 is a starburst galaxy, with the peak of star formation being 20–100 million years ago. Uppsala General Catalogue
The Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies (UGC) is a catalogue of 12,921 galaxies visible from the northern hemisphere. It was first published in 1973. The catalogue includes essentially all galaxies north of declination −02°30′ and to a limiting diameter of 1.0 arcminute or to a limiting apparent magnitude of 14.5. The primary source of data is the blue prints of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS). It also includes galaxies smaller than 1.0 arcminute in diameter but brighter than 14.5 magnitude from the Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies (CGCG). The catalogue contains descriptions of the galaxies and their surrounding areas, plus conventional system classifications and position angles for flattened galaxies. The Local Group is the galaxy group that includes the Milky Way, where Earth is located. It has a total diameter of roughly , and a total mass of the order of . An irregular galaxy is a galaxy that does not have a distinct regular shape, unlike a spiral or an elliptical galaxy. Irregular galaxies do not fall into any of the regular classes of the Hubble sequence, and they are often chaotic in appearance, with neither a nuclear bulge nor any trace of spiral arm structure. This absence of structure in an irregular galaxy leads to little density waves in these galaxies. A galactic disc (or galactic disk) is a component of disc galaxies, such as spiral galaxies like the Milky Way and lenticular galaxies. Galactic discs consist of a stellar component (composed of most of the galaxy's stars) and a gaseous component (mostly composed of cool gas and dust). A starburst galaxy is one undergoing an exceptionally high rate of star formation, as compared to the long-term average rate of star formation in the galaxy, or the star formation rate observed in most other galaxies. GR 8 (galaxy)
GR 8 (also known as UGC 8091) is a gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxy. In 1995, Tolstoy et al. estimated its distance (with the Hipparcos correction of 1997 applied) to be approximately from Earth. It is around 2.8 Mly from UGC 9128. It is still an open question whether it is a member of the Local Group or possibly the Virgo Cluster.
