The General Directorate for Internal Security (, , DGSI; also known as the Directorate-General for Internal Security in English) is a French security agency. It is charged with counter-espionage, counter-terrorism, countering cybercrime and surveillance of potentially threatening groups, organisations and social phenomena. The agency was created in 2008 under the name Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence (, DCRI), merging the ''Direction centrale des renseignements généraux'' (RG) and the ''Direction de la surveillance du territoire'' (DST) of the National Police. It acquired its current name in 2014, with a small structural shift: contrary to the DCRI which was part of the National Police, the DGSI reports directly to the Ministry of the Interior. The Pierre-sur-Haute military radio station is a French armed forces, French military communications site that has been in use since 1913. The station is located on a hilltop in the Sauvain and Job, Puy-de-Dôme, Job communes of France, communes 45.6531°N 3.8084°E. The Direction de la surveillance du territoire (, , abbr. DST) was a directorate of the French National Police operating as a domestic intelligence agency. It was responsible for counterespionage, counterterrorism and more generally the security of France against foreign threats and interference. Patrick Calvar (born 26 November 1955) served as head of the French General Directorate for Internal Security from 30 May 2012 to 31 May 2017. Patrick Calvar has spent over 30 years in the French security and intelligence services, starting his career during the Cold War. He joined the Police in 1977 and Security Service in 1984. He has worked at all levels of responsibility and was eventually appointed Deputy Director of the security service. In 2010, he became director of intelligence of the foreign intelligence service, the General Directorate for external security (DGSE). In 2012, he was appointed as Director General of the French security service, the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI, then DCRI). He retired from Government Service in May 2017. Jean-Jacques Urvoas (born 19 September 1959) is a French politician. He was minister of Justice from 2016 to 2017. He represented Finistère's 1st constituency in the National Assembly of France from 2007 to 2016, as a member of the Socialist, radical, citizen and miscellaneous left. National Centre For Counter Terrorism
The National Centre for Counter Terrorism is an agency charged with monitoring and preventing terrorism in France. It was created by President Emmanuel Macron on 7 June 2017, the day following the 2017 Notre Dame attack, in response to a series of Islamist terrorist attacks in France. The new Centre will report directly to the President and is headed by Laurent Nuñez, who succeeded Pierre de Bousquet de Florian in 2020 in the role. The Centre will be located in the presidential Elysee palace and will operate 24-hours a day, focusing on citizens of France who have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq and on how to counter Islamic radicalization and jihadist distribution of information on how to carry out terror attacks. 2017 Notre Dame Attack
On 6 June 2017, at around 16:00 CET, French police shot a man who attacked a police officer with a hammer outside Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral on the Île de la Cité, located in the centre of Paris. The man injured the officer with the hammer, and was found to be in possession of kitchen knives. French police opened a terrorism investigation. The accused is an Algerian-born journalist named Farid Ikken, who won an award for his prize-winning human rights writing in Sweden, before returning to Algeria where he started an online news site, and then, moved to France on a student visa, he was pursuing a PhD in communications at the time of the attack.
