D!v!s!on #9 (or Division #9) was the name of an electronic music project founded by composer Mick Hale and based in New Brunswick. Hale debuted with the studio album ''The True Creator'' in 1996 followed with '' Dub N Bass: Omen II'' in 1997. History D!v!s!on #9 was created in 1996 by New Brunswick-based composer Mick Hale. Later that year D!v!s!on #9 released ''The True Creator'' on Full Contact Records. Hale drew from his electro music influences such as Aphex Twin, Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA and Lassique Bendhaus and to shape his ambient, jungle and trance compositions. This was released on New Jersey-based music label Tinman after the bankruptcy of the project's previous label, Fifth Colvmn Records. The track "Omen II" was contributed to the 1998 various artists compilation ''Empire One'', also released by Tinman. Reception Sonic Boom commended the artistic growth shown by D!v!s!on #9 in the compositions and claimed "those changes make the album much easier to listen to outside of a club situation because you can actually enjoy the music without being forced into a crowded dance hall." ''The True Creator'' is the debut studio album of D!v!s!on #9, released on July 23, 1996, by Full Contact Records. The track " Dub Altar" was contributed to the 1996 various artists compilation '' Echo'', released by the same label. Reception In reviewing ''The True Creator'', Aiding & Abetting said "this stuff doesn't get dull" and " Division #9 has done a fine job of traversing the wide expanses of the electronic music universe to craft these pieces." A critic at babysue called the album "minimal, rhythmic electronic heaven" and "the result is a very sensual, sexy batch of tunes that can either be listened to or played as background music." A lukewarm response came from Sonic Boom, who commended the musical diversity in the compositions but claimed "it is nothing altogether new or innovative, but it something that Mick has never been able to do in the past and as a result his musical growth has more than shown through." Reception Aiding & Abetting gave ''Echo'' a positive review and said "the range of possibilities in electronic music is pretty wide, and this set shows that quite well." Lollipop Magazine said "Intent on being an overview of Fifth Colvmn’s sister label Full Contact, ''Echo'' does its best to showcase the best music they’ve got" and "if you ever wanted a reasonably full understanding of what the "alternative" label means to Electro bands, Echo comes pretty damn close." Sonic Boom said "There isn't a single letdown track on the whole record with stellar performances turned in by Ipecac Loop, C17H19NO3, Shinjuku Filth & Zia" and "almost all of the tracks on this compilation are exclusive and appear nowhere else which makes this a must have for serious completists." Fifth Colvmn Records was a record label based in Washington, DC. The label was founded in 1990 by Zalman Fishman, owner of the nightclub FIFTH COLVMN, located in Washington D.C. The label's first release was Chemlab's debut EP Ten Ton Pressure. Jared Hendrickson of Chemlab also became the general manager for the label. Chemlab later played several dates with Nine Inch Nails, eventually attracting a distribution deal for their next release, Burn Out at the Hydrogen Bar, with Metal Blade Records. The band Thud was the next artist to join the label. Heavy, loud and unrelenting, Thud became very popular amongst Metal fans and critics alike luring Eli Janney from Girls Against Boys to contribute to their debut record Life & Death and earning co-headling performances with Stone Temple Pilots. Mick Hale
Mick Hale is an American musician, songwriter, producer, remixer, DJ, and graphic artist. Credited on over three dozen commercial releases, his body of work spans over 30 years, from 1984 onwards. DJ, writer, and graphic artist Hale began his DJ career in the mid-1980s as a guest on the College radio stations WPRB, Princeton and WRSU, New Brunswick. His focus ran from Motown/Stax soul and Trojan dub reggae sounds to 1960s British psychedelic pop and various indie alternative of the day. Subsequently, he found himself invited to spin at clubs such as Maxwell's in Hoboken and other NYC-area Dives. By the early 1990s Hale's musical focus had grown to encompass House, Electro, Tribal House, New Beat, Jungle, and Techno. From 1991 to 1998 Hale found himself employed 3-nites a week at New Brunswick's The Roxy as the head resident DJ.
