Polycoccaceae
Polycoccaceae is a family (biology), family of lichenicolous fungus, lichenicolous (lichen-dwelling) fungi in the order Trypetheliales. The family was circumscription (taxonomy), circumscribed in 2015 by Damien Ertz, Josef Hafellner, and Paul Diederich. Molecular phylogenetic analysis shows Polycoccaceae to have a sister group, sister relationship with the family Trypetheliaceae. Species within the Polycoccaceae distinguish themselves from those in the Trypetheliaceae due to their non-lichenized, lichenicolous nature and typically smaller, 1-septum, septate, brown . However, both share similarities, such as ascomata, intertwined set within a hymenial gel matrix, and asci. The primary morphology (biology), morphological characteristics of the core group of the family, the type genus ''Polycoccum'', are its thick-walled ascospores that are often distinctly ornamented. Polycoccaceae comprises two genera: ''Clypeococcum'' with 12 species, and ''Polycoccum'' with 60 species. All m ...

Trypetheliaceae
The Trypetheliaceae are a family of mainly lichen-forming fungi in the order Trypetheliales. The family consists almost exclusively of corticolous (bark-dwelling), crustose lichens with an almost strictly tropical distribution. Taxonomy Trypetheliaceae was circumscribed by German botanist Franz Gerhard Eschweiler in 1824. His of the family was as follows (translated from Latin):"Thallus is crust-like. Apothecia are of varied shape, immersed in warts formed from the thallus's medullary substance." Eschweiler further notes that the family is almost exclusively found within the tropics. In his initial circumscription, he included the following genera: '' Arthonia'', '' Porothelium'', '' Medusula'', '' Ophthalmidium'', '' Trypethelium'', '' Astrothelium'', '' Glyphis'', '' Chiodecton'', and '' Conioloma''. The family Arthopyreniaceae was placed into synonymy with Trypetheliaceae, and its type genus, '' Arthopyrenia'', was transferred to Trypetheliaceae in 2021. Other synonyms of ...

Dothideomycetes
Dothideomycetes is the largest and most diverse class of ascomycete fungi. It comprises 11 orders 90 families, 1,300 genera and over 19,000 known species. Wijayawardene et al. in 2020 added more orders to the class. Traditionally, most of its members were included in the loculoascomycetes, which is not part of the currently accepted classification. This indicates that several traditional morphological features in the class are not unique and DNA sequence comparisons are important to define the class. The designation loculoascomycetes was first proposed for all fungi which have ascolocular development. This type of development refers to the way in which the sexual structure, bearing the sexual spores ( ascospores) forms. Dothideomycetes mostly produce flask-like structures referred to as pseudothecia, although other shape variations do exist (e.g. see structures found in Hysteriales). During ascolocular development pockets ( locules) form first within the vegetative cells ...

Astrothelium
''Astrothelium'' is a large genus of corticolous (bark-dwelling) lichens in the family Trypetheliaceae. The genus is characterized by a corticate thallus and diverse ascomata structures, which can be simple, aggregated, or forming . ''Astrothelium'' is also notable for the walls of its ascomata, the so-called ' (i.e., tightly interwoven) arrangement of cells in these walls, and various forms of , transparent spores. Taxonomy The genus was circumscribed in 1824 by German botanist Franz Gerhard Eschweiler, with '' Astrothelium conicum'' assigned as the type species. Description The thallus, or the vegetative body of ''Astrothelium'', is , meaning it is covered by a protective . The ascomata, which are the fruiting bodies containing the reproductive spores, can appear in various forms such as simple, aggregated, or forming . These structures often differ in their composition and colour, and can be used as to distinguish between species. The ascomata can range from being immersed ...

Bathelium
''Bathelium'' is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Trypetheliaceae. Taxonomy The genus was circumscribed in 1803 by Swedish lichenologist Erik Acharius, with '' Bathelium mastoideum'' assigned as the type species. Description Genus ''Bathelium'' features a thallus (a protective outer layer) usually with olive-green to brownish or greyish hues. This genus is distinguished by the form of its ascomata, the spore-producing structures, which possess apical ostioles (openings at the top). These ascomata can be found either singly or in groups, and often form , a stroma made of both thallus tissue and bits of host tissue. They are noticeable, ranging from to , and show a brown-black colouration, though in rare instances, they may have a whitish (powdery) appearance. This is complemented by a peripheral layer made up of tightly packed cells. Within the ascomata, the , a tissue layer containing filamentous structures, is clear and hyaline (translucent). It comprises thin, ...

Aptrootia
''Aptrootia'' is a genus of fungi in the family Trypetheliaceae. It has four species. The genus was circumscribed by Robert Lücking and Harrie Sipman in 2007, with ''Aptrootia terricola'' assigned as the type species. This species, originally described by Dutch mycologist André Aptroot as a species of '' Thelenella'', is known from Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica. Later molecular work showed that the species did not belong in ''Thelenella'' (Aptroot himself had expressed doubt about this generic placement), but rather, in the Trypetheliaceae, with a sister taxon relationship to a branch including ''Bathelium'' and a lineage containing '' Trypethelium floridanum''. The new genus name honours Aptroot, "in recognition of his numerous contributions to tropical lichenology". Species in genus ''Aptrootia'' have completely immersed perithecia with a brown-black ostiolar region. This is surrounded by a white, cartilaginous thallus reminiscent of those in family Gomphillaceae The Go ...

Description ''Architrypethelium'' is marked by a thallus with a protective outer layer known as the . This genus has ascomata (fruiting bodies responsible for spore production) that can be found either singularly or clustered together. The ostioles are positioned either at the apex (top) or eccentrically (off-centre). Their walls consist of intertwined hyphal threads, known as ', and have a (blackened) appearance. The , a tissue layer inside the ascomata containing filamentous structures, is either transparent or with oil droplets. These filaments are slender and form an interwoven network known as anastomosing . in ''Architrypethelium'' are typically (having a two-part septum) and euseptate (only on ...
