ICFTU Inter American Regional Organisation Of Workers
The ICFTU Inter American Regional Organisation of Workers (, ORIT) was the regional organization of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) for the Americas. The federation was formed in 1951, and described its objective as being to work for independent, autonomous, democratic unions throughout the Americas. The ICFTU merged with the World Confederation of Labor in 2006, and in 2008, ORIT merged with the WCL's former regional organisation for the Americas, the Latin American Confederation of Workers, to form the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas. As of 2005, the organization had 65 affiliated or fraternal organizations, in 29 countries, representing 50 million workers. Frederick D. Redmond is a Black labor union official. Born in Chicago, Redmond began working at the Reynolds Metal Company in 1973. He soon joined the United Steelworkers (USW), becoming president of its Local 3911. In 1998, he began working for the union, then in 2006, he was elected as its international vice president for human affairs, with responsibilities including representing healthcare workers. Víctor Báez Mosqueira (born 29 May 1956) is a Paraguayan trade union leader. Born in Asuncion, Báez was a founding member of the Trade Union of Bank Employees in the 1970s, serving as its general secretary from 1977 until 1986. In 1983, Báez was elected as the auditor of the ICFTU Inter American Regional Organisation of Workers (ORIT), and in 1985 he additionally became general secretary of the Paraguayan Inter-Union Movement (MIT). With democratisation in Paraguay, the MIT became the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores, and Báez served as its president from 1989 until 1993. Hassan Yussuff (born December 15, 1957) is a Canadian labour leader and politician. From 2014 to 2021, Yussuff served as president of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), the first visible minority person to hold the role. In 2021, Yussuff was appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to serve as Canadian Senator from Ontario. Early life Yussuff emigrated to Canada from Guyana as a young man to work as a heavy truck mechanic.
