A town is an incorporated municipality in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Prince Edward Island has ten towns, which had a cumulative population of 32,632 and an average population of 3,263 in the 2021 Census. The province's largest and smallest towns are Stratford and North Rustico with populations of 10,927 and 648 respectively. The province's newest town is Three Rivers, which was incorporated on September 28, 2018. Governance Pursuant to Prince Edward Island's ''Municipal Government Act (MGA)'', each town elects a mayor and six councillors, unless an increase is enacted by municipal bylaw. For the 2018–2022 term, nine of the ten towns have a council of seven, while Three Rivers has a council of thirteen, which results in a total of 92 elected officials governing towns in Prince Edward Island. Cornwall is a Canadian town located in Queens County, Prince Edward Island. The town is located immediately west of the provincial capital Charlottetown. History The community of Cornwall traces its history to European settlement in the 18th century and was a predominantly farming community until the construction of Route 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, during the early 1910s. Several subdivisions were created near the intersection of the new highway with the Meadowbank Road, along with a small commercial strip. Georgetown is a community located within the municipality of Three Rivers in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is the Capital of Kings County. Tignish is a Canadian town located in Prince County, Prince Edward Island. It is located approximately northwest of the city of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Summerside, and northwest of the city of Charlottetown. It has a population of 719. The name "Tignish" is derived from the Mi'kmaq "Mtagunich", meaning "paddle". The name is also believed to come from a Gaelic phrase meaning “Home Place”. Kings County (2021 population 18,327) is located in eastern Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is the province's smallest, most rural and least-populated county. Kings County is also least dependent upon the agriculture industry compared with the other two counties, while being more heavily dependent on the fishery and forest industry. Comparatively large parts of the county are still forested and it hosts the province's largest sawmill. The only heavy industry, aside from forestry and industrial farming, is a small shipyard, although secondary manufacturing has been established in recent years. The county was named by Capt. Souris, Prince Edward Island
Souris () is a town in Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is located near the northeastern tip of the province. History Souris was founded by Acadians in 1727 as a fishing settlement at the mouth of the Souris River. These early settlers experienced several plagues of field mice in the surrounding area during the 1720s-1760s which damaged crops. Souris is French for "mouse" and a mouse is the town's mascot. It is said that "a French vessel passing by the bay in the early 1700s was forced to cut through the waves of drowned mice and so gave the name to the area. The 1744 map of Sieur de la Roque names the bay, Havre a la Souris”. Earlier names also included: Colville Bay, Grand Haven, New Bristol, and Red Cliffs. O'Leary, Prince Edward Island
O'Leary is a village located in Prince County, Prince Edward Island, about 60 kilometers west of Summerside. Its population in the 2021 Canadian Census was 876 people. O'Leary was incorporated as a village in 1951, and as a community in 1983. History Michael O'Leary The village is named after Michael O'Leary, an Irish settler who arrived in Prince Edward Island in 1837. Michael O'Leary settled with his wife in what is now the town of O'Leary. In 1837, western Prince Edward Island was sparsely settled, with no roads and only a small amount of cleared land, so O'Leary himself cleared a road through the wilderness to his property from Cascumpeque; this became O'Leary Road, today part of Route 142, which is the town's main street.
