In Bahrain, there are seven free-to-air television channels, four of which are privately owned. The country's public service broadcaster, Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation (BRTC), broadcasts over five terrestrial TV networks, including the popular Channel 44 (Bahrain), Channel 44. Orbit Communications Company was a privately owned pay television network headquartered in Bahrain. Owned by Saudi Arabiabased Mawarid Holding (via Digital Media Systems), it was the first fully digital, multi-channel, multilingual, pay television service in the Middle East and North Africa and was also the world's first fully end-to-end digital TV network. Radio In Bahrain
Radio broadcasting started in Bahrain in 1940 by the British as a war-measure. Regular radio broadcasting, in Arabic, first started in 1955. By 1980, the radio service broadcast up to 14 hours a day. The country's first English language radio station started in 1977, as a result of an increase in English speakers in Bahrain and the Persian Gulf region. The radio's programs were primarily religious and educational, with occasional news announcements. Almost all radio stations in Bahrain are state-owned, by the Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation. The media of Bahrain mainly consists of several weekly and daily newspapers, with the Information Affairs Authority controlling Bahrain's state-owned Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation, which broadcasts radio and television services. The media is predominantly in Arabic though English language and Malayalam newspapers are beginning to emerge in the country. Al-Arab () was a short-lived Arabic-language news channel which vowed to practice objective journalism. It was launched on 1 February 2015 and almost immediately shut down. The channel was owned by Saudi prince and entrepreneur Al-Waleed bin Talal, and was based in Manama, Bahrain. Creation In July 2010, Prince Al-Waleed, owner of a stake in News Corporation, planned to collaborate with News Corp to launch a 24-hour Arabic-language news channel. After a year of deliberation, Al-Waleed announced on 13 September 2011 the launch of Alarab as a personal private venture. He said the channel's editorial stance would be "inspired by the recent political events that have transformed the region, with particular attention to be paid to freedom of speech." The channel was supposedly entirely privately funded, with Al-Waleed insisting that it would not receive instructions from the Saudi government. LuaLua TV
LuaLua TV (Arabic:قناة اللؤلؤة) is a Bahraini opposition TV Channel. It started broadcasting in 2011 from London. It was named after the Pearl Roundabout. It is blocked in most Gulf Cooperation Council countries, including Bahrain. In June 2021, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Industry and Security seized LuaLua's domain, alongside several other websites such as Press TV, Al-Alam TV and Al-Masirah TV, citing links to Iran and therefore, violations of US sanctions. The website has since come back under a new domain. LuaLua TV was described as pro-Iran by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and Reuters. The channel was accused of supporting Hezbollah and Hamas by broadcasting content by the militant groups, which are considered terrorist organizations in the U.K. where the channel is based. Information Affairs Authority
The Information Affairs Authority (IAA) is Bahrain's ministry of information that was formed in July 2010. The president of IAA is appointed directly by the King of Bahrain and has the rank of a minister (government), minister in the Bahrain government. From July 2010 to 2012, Fawaz bin Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa was President of IAA. In 2012, he relinquished the position to take up an appointment as Minister of State for Communication, and Sameera Rajab was appointed in his place.
