Stordal Municipality
Stordal is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1892 until its dissolution in 2020 (except for a brief time from 1965-1977). The area is now part of Fjord Municipality in the Traditional districts of Norway, traditional district of Sunnmøre. Old Stordal Church
Old Stordal Church (; nicknamed: ') is a former parish church of the Church of Norway in Fjord Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located in the village of Stordal. It is now a museum owned by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments. It was once the church for the Stordal parish which is part of the Nordre Sunnmøre prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Møre. Design The white, wooden church was built in an octagonal style in 1789 to replace an earlier stave church on the site. The building was designed by local priest Ebbe Carsten Tønder who died four years before construction was completed, so it must have been planned at the time of Norddal Church (completed 1782). Tønder came from Trondheim and may have been inspired by the two older octagonal churches there. Stordal (village)
Stordal is the administrative centre of Fjord Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The village is located on the eastern shore of the Storfjorden (Sunnmøre), Storfjorden at the mouth of the river ''Stordalselva''. The village of Sjøholt (in neighboring Ålesund Municipality) lies about north of Stordal, on the other side of the Stordal Tunnel. The historic mountain farm, Ytste Skotet, lies about to the northwest, across the fjord. The village has a population (2024) of 584 and a population density of . The main church for the municipality, Stordal Church is located in this village. The Old Stordal Church, now a museum, is also located here. Stordal Church
Stordal Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Fjord Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located in the village of Stordal. It is the church for the Stordal parish which is part of the Nordre Sunnmøre prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Møre. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1907 using plans drawn up by the architect Jens Zetlitz Monrad Kielland. The church seats about 270 people. The church has a large steeple in the front. History The church was built in 1907 to replace the Old Stordal Church, located about to the east. The new church was built in 1907. It has a large tower on the west end of the nave. On the east end of the nave lies the choir which has a semi-circular apse on the east end. The choir is flanked by sacristies with slightly unusual shapes.
