Status Quo (band)
Status Quo are a British rock band. The group originated in London and was founded in 1962 by Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster while they were still schoolboys. After a number of name and lineup changes, which included the introduction of John Coghlan (drummer), John Coghlan in 1963 and Rick Parfitt in 1967, the band became The Status Quo in 1967 and Status Quo in 1969. As of 2022, the group have been active for 60 consecutive years (despite announcing a breakup in 1984, they played Live Aid the following year and resumed normal activities in 1986). They have had over 60 chart hits in the UK – more than any other band – including "Pictures of Matchstick Men" (their first charting song), "Caroline (Status Quo song), Caroline" (their first top 5 hit), and "Down Down" (their only No. 1 hit). Richie Malone
Richie Malone (born 18 March 1986) is an Irish musician who plays rhythm guitar for English rock band Status Quo (band), Status Quo. Malone first played with the band in July 2016, when previous guitarist Rick Parfitt was no longer able to tour due to a heart attack. Parfitt died in December 2016, and Malone became his permanent replacement. Career Malone was the frontman of RAID, a rock band based in Dublin. He was a fan of Status Quo (band), Status Quo through his father, first seeing them live in concert in 1999. He was particularly a fan of rhythm guitarist Rick Parfitt, emulating his playing style from a young age, and travelling to England to have a replica of Parfitt's trademark white 1965 Fender Telecaster made. Malone met the band a number of times backstage after concerts, and became close friends with them. UK Albums Chart
The Official Albums Chart is the United Kingdom's industry-recognised national record chart for album, albums. Entries are ranked by sales and audio streaming. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on ''UKChartsPlus'' as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. The Official UK Charts Company Limited (formerly Music Industry Chart Services Limited), trading as the Official Charts Company (OCC) or the Official Charts (formerly the Chart Information Network), is a British inter-professional organisation that compiles various official record charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. In the United Kingdom, its charts include ones for singles, albums and films, with the data compiled from a mixture of downloads, purchases (of physical media) and streaming. ''Backbone'' is the 33rd studio album by British rock band Status Quo. It was released on 6 September 2019 and debuted at number six on the UK Albums Chart (and at top spot on the Album Sales Chart, which subtracts streaming activity from specific album purchases in all digital and physical formats). It was the band's 25th UK top ten album and their highest-charting album of original material since '' 1+9+8+2'' (1982). ''Backbone'' also entered the Swiss album charts at number two, and the German album charts at number six, giving the band their highest album chart position in the latter, despite a long history of enduring popularity. Piledriver (Status Quo Album)
''Piledriver'' is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Status Quo, released in 1972. It was the first to be produced by the group themselves, and their first on the Vertigo label. It peaked at number five in the UK and included several favourites that would be featured frequently in live concerts. Background The album was the first the group recorded after they had switched labels from Pye to Vertigo. When recording for Pye, the studio staff had complained about the volume as it would overload the input levels on the recording desk and distort, but for ''Piledriver'', they could bring their touring gear into IBC Studios and record live at stage levels, giving them a much stronger sound. "Down Down" is a song by English rock band Status Quo, released by Vertigo Records on 29 November 1974. Written by Francis Rossi and Bob Young and produced by Status Quo, "Down Down" was Status Quo's only number one single on the UK Singles Chart. The single spent a week at the top of the chart in January 1975. Both "Down Down" and its B-side "Nightride" were taken from the album '' On the Level'' (1975), which had yet to be released. The album version lasts 5 minutes and 24 seconds, whilst the single version is 3 minutes and 49 seconds. Song information "Down Down" was inspired by T. Rex's debut single " Debora". Originally it was titled "Get Down", but this was changed before release, possibly to avoid confusion with the Gilbert O'Sullivan song of the same name. Towards the end of his life, DJ John Peel was known for playing "Down Down" as part of his eclectic DJ sets. "Pictures of Matchstick Men" is the first hit single by British rock band The Status Quo. It was released on 5 January 1968. The Status Quo version The song reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart, number eight in Canada, and number 12 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100, becoming their only top-40 single in the United States. Francis Rossi confirmed on DVD2 of the Pictures set, that it was originally intended to be a B-side to "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe", but it was decided to swap the B-side and the A-side of the single. There are two versions, one in stereo and another in mono, with significant differences: the original single was in mono and has the trademark wah-wah guitar in the breaks between lyrics, but this is omitted in stereo. Live Aid was a two-venue benefit concert and music-based fundraising initiative held on Saturday, 13 July 1985. The event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise further funds for relief of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia, a movement that started with the release of the successful charity single " Do They Know It's Christmas?" in December 1984.
