Southern Lord is an American heavy metal music, heavy metal record label that was founded in 1998 by Greg Anderson (musician), Greg Anderson. It initially specialized in experimental metal: particularly doom metal, stoner rock, and drone metal. The label later expanded its line-up to include artists from black metal, hardcore punk and crust punk bands. History Before co-founding their own record label Greg Anderson (guitarist), Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley were friends and bandmates in Thorr's Hammer and Burning Witch. The pair formed a new band named Sunn O))) in 1998 and moved to Los Angeles. They started Southern Lord as a way to have control over the releases of their own recordings. Southern Lord's first release was the CD version (previously released as a cassette) of Thorr’s Hammer‘s ''Dommedagsnatt--'' a doom/death metal album with Norwegian lyrics. Stephen O'Malley (sometimes referred to as SOMA; born July 15, 1974) is an American guitarist, producer, composer, and visual artist from Seattle, Washington, who has conceptualized and participated in numerous drone metal, doom metal, and experimental music bands, most notably Sunn O))). All Pigs Must Die is an American metalcore supergroup consisting of Kevin Baker of The Hope Conspiracy, Ben Koller of Converge, Adam Wentworth and Matt Woods of Bloodhorse, and Brian Izzi of Trap Them. They have been categorized as post-rock, post-metal, doom metal, sludge metal and hard rock, but have moved toward a darker and heavier metal sound. Probot was a heavy metal recording project led by American musician Dave Grohl, as a side project from his primary group Foo Fighters. The album was released in February 2004 by Southern Lord Records. Described by Grohl as "a death metal ''Supernatural''", the album mixes instrumentals recorded mainly by Grohl along with various metal singers he admired.
