Rheden () is a Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands. Many estates arose at the foot of the Veluwezoom, forming an almost unbroken row from Arnhem to Dieren. Examples are Middachten Castle (14th century), Biljoen Castle (16th century) and Huis Rhederoord (18th century). The estates and their residents provided work for the local population. The castles also provided a safe haven in times of unrest. Rheden Railway Station
Rheden is a railway station located in Rheden, Netherlands. The station was opened in 1882 and is located on the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway. The station is currently operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The station closed on 2 October 1927 and reopened on 18 May 1952. The platforms are not located opposite each other, but on either side of the level crossing. Velp, Gelderland
Velp is a Dutch village located east of Arnhem within the municipality of Rheden, between Arnhem, Rozendaal, and the town of Rheden. Velp was a separate municipality from 1812 to 1818, when it was merged with Rheden. The municipality also included the village of Rozendaal. De Steeg
De Steeg is a Dutch village within the municipality of Rheden. Due to its central location within the municipality, it houses the town hall. Middachten Castle is located near the village. Several De Steeg buildings once belonged to the Middachten estate. These buildings, including the Post office in De Steeg, can be recognized by the red and white color scheme. History It was first mentioned in 1648 as Opde Steegh, and means path. The village developed around Middachten Castle. The castle was first mentioned in 1315. The current building dates from between 1354 and 1357. It was restored in 1643, and enlarged between 1694 and 1697. Rhederoord is a manor house from the 17th century which was enlarged in 1745. Dieren Railway Station
Dieren is a railway station located in Dieren, Netherlands. The station was opened on 2 February 1865 and is located on the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway. Until 1976, the official name was Dieren-Doesburg. The train services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Laag-Soeren
Laag-Soeren is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is about 4 km northwest of Dieren, in the municipalities of Rheden and Brummen. It used to be a spa town. History It was first mentioned between 1830 and 1855 as Laag Soeren to distinguish from Hoog Soeren. The etymology is unknown. Laag-Soeren started as an ''esdorp'' located in a valley. In 1850, it became a spa town because of the discovery of spring water. The bath house and sanatorium Bethesda opened in 1870, and closed in 1942. In 1850, the Priesznitz monument was revealed to honour Vincenz Priessnitz, the founder of hydrotherapy. In 1840, it was home to 343 people. Hotel Dullemond was a large hotel in Laag-Soeren. Dieren
Dieren () is a town in the eastern Netherlands. It is located in Rheden, Gelderland, between Zutphen and Arnhem, on the bank of the IJssel. Dieren was a separate municipality until 1818, when it became a part of Rheden. The Gazelle bicycle factory is located in Dieren. History " Hof te Dieren" was the house of the Dutch Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik of Orange, William II, Prince of Orange, William III of Orange and William IV of Orange. They enlarged the house and held hunting parties in the nearby woods. A road was built, connecting Dieren to The Hague, which is called the "Koningsweg". The road can still be found in many places in the Netherlands, such as Otterlo. The house was heavily damaged by Canadian soldiers during the liberation of the Netherlands, as they were under the wrong impression that German SS soldiers were located in the house. Biljoen Castle
Castle Biljoen lies between the Veluwe and the IJssel near Velp. This ''Noble House'' from the 16th century was rebuilt by Alexander van Spaen (1619–1692) into the present day castle with four equal corner towers. History The castle is thought to have its original as a large farm, first mentioned in 1076. In 1530 Charles, Duke of Guelders made it into a castle, including the towers. In the 18th century the family Van Spaen built the castle into its current state. In 1795, French troops were quartered in the castle. After they left was plundered, the interior being largely destroyed. It was restored with ornamental plaster and ceiling paintings (among other things). Ownership The estate was originally called ''Broekerhof'', and was a place where taxes were collected. In 1076 it was donated by Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor to the Sint-Pieter Chapter in Utrecht. Middachten Castle
Middachten Castle () is a monumental manor house, located on the Middachten estate, De Steeg, Netherlands. The current building dates from 1693-1698. The castle is a rijksmonument since October 11, 2004, and is part of the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites. History The first mention of a castle on this location dates from 1190, owned by Jacobus de Mithdac. Early in the 14th century Everardus van Steenre transferred its ownership to Reinald, count of Gelre. Everardus then got the castle back as a loan in 1357. The castle would remain with this family until 1625. During this time the castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1673 Stadtholder William III conquered the city of Bonn, making the occupying French troops retreat, who destroyed the castle. Godard van Ginkel and his spouse Ursula van Raesfelt then had the castle rebuilt, based on the example of Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn.
