The president of Puntland is the head of government and state of Puntland. The Presidency was elected by the House of Representatives of Puntland behind establishing the Puntland State in Somalia on August 1, 1998. History and establishment In 1998, the state of Puntland declared its autonomy, and Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, who later served as the 8th President of Somalia, was chosen as the state's first president. On 8 January 2024, President Said Abdullahi Deni was re-elected in the 2024 Puntland presidential election. Puntland
Puntland is an autonomous state that considers itself to be part of Somalia, despite not accepting the legitimacy of Somalia's current governing administration. It was formed in 1998, and was a federal member state of Somalia from its founding until 2024. Puntland is located northeast of Somalia and east of Somaliland. Its capital is the city of Garoowe in the Nugal region. The state had a population of 4,334,633 in 2016. Puntland is bordered by Somaliland to its west, the Gulf of Aden in the north, the Guardafui Channel in the northeast, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, Somalia, more specifically the central Galmudug region in the south, and Ethiopia in the southwest. Jama Ali Jama (, ) is a Somali politician. He was the President of Puntland from November 14, 2001, to May 8, 2002. The period of his presidency was overshadowed by the Puntland Crisis (2001–2002), which began after former president Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed rejected Jama's election. In May 2002 he was forcible deposed by Ethiopian troops seeking to install his political rival president. Early life Jama is from the Osman Mahmoud sub-clan of the Majeerteen Darod. Yusuf Haji Nur (, ; died 23 June 2019) was a Somali politician and lawyer. He was Chief Justice of Puntland. Biography On 1 July 2001, he declared himself acting President of Puntland after the end of the presidential term of Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed. However, the former President rejected Yusuf Haji's claim and insisted that he was the legitimate President, which led to a two-year civil war in Puntland. Mohamed Abdi Hashi
Mohamed Abdi Hashi (, ; died 12 July 2020) was the first Vice President of Puntland during Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed presidency from 1 August 1998 to 10 October 2004. Later was the acting President of Puntland from 10 October 2004 until 8 January 2005. Hashi was the chairman of USP during the 1990s. He hails from the Qayaad subclan of the larger clan Dhulbahante.
