Pieridae
The Pieridae are a large family (biology), family of butterflies with about 76 genera containing about 1,100 species, mostly from Afrotropical realm, tropical Africa and Indomalayan realm, tropical Asia with some varieties in the more northern regions of North America and Eurasia.DeVries P. J. in Levin S.A. (ed) 2001 The Encyclopaedia of Biodiversity. Academic Press. Most pierid butterflies are white, yellow, or orange in coloration, often with black spots. The pigments that give the distinct coloring to these butterflies are derived from waste products in the body and are a characteristic of this family.Carter, David (2000). ''Butterflies and Moths''. The family was created by William Swainson in 1820. The name "butterfly" is believed to have originated from a member of this family, the brimstone, ''Gonepteryx rhamni'', which was called the "butter-coloured fly" by early British naturalists. The sexes usually differ, often in the pattern or number of the black markings. The l ...

''Anthocharis sara'', the Sara orangetip, is one of three species in the Sara orangetip complex. It has a population extending from Baja California into extreme southwest Oregon and another extending from the east slope of the Sierra Nevada into far western Nevada. The common name Pacific orangetip is obsolete since it implies a distribution that includes two separate species. Taxonomy ''Anthocharis sara'' is part of the ''Anthocharis sara'' complex, along with the southwestern orangetip ('' Anthocharis thoosa'') and Julia orangetip ('' Anthocharis julia'').. Some have been spotted in the Grand Tetons Nation Park in June 2025. ''A. sara'' contains four recognized subspecies: * ''A. s. gunderi'' (Ingham, 1933), the Santa Catalina Island orangetip: Santa Catalina and Santa Cruz islands * ''A. s. pseudothoosa'' (Austin, 1998): east slope of the Sierra Nevada and adjacent regions * ''A. s. sara'' (Lucas, 1852): widespread west of the Sierra Nevada from the west coast of central ...

Euchloe Olympia
''Euchloe olympia'', the Olympia marble, is a butterfly in the family (biology), family Pieridae. Its range is southern Canada and the Midwest, down into the southwestern United States. ''E. olympia'' is related to ''E. guaymasensis'', but has a distinctive phenotype and genotype. Back, W., Miller, M. A., & Opler, P. A. (2011). Genetic, phenetic, and distributional relationships of nearctic Euchloe (Pieridae, Pierinae, Anthocharidini). The Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society, 65(1), 1-14. Nectar source ''Euchloe olympia'' has been observed to use ''Lepidium virginicum'' as its main nectar source as a larval and as an adult the main nectar source was found to be ''Nuttallanthus canadensis''. Based on a study done in a central Illinois sand prairie, ''Echloe olympia'' was observed to show consistency on the flowers it visits to obtain its nectar from. Conservation status The Olympia marble has been classified globally as G5/G4, meaning that globally it is a relatively stable sp ...
