Murray River Council
The Murray River Council is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of Murray Shire with Wakool Shire. The combined area comprises and covers the northern bank of the Murray River and hinterland from Moama downstream to Tooleybuc. At the time of its establishment, the estimated population of the area was . Main towns and villages The largest town in Murray River Council is Moama in the far south east. Moama
Moama ( or ) is a town in the Murray region of southern New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. The town is directly across the Murray River from the larger town of Echuca in the neighbouring state of Victoria, to which it is connected by a bridge. At the 2016 census, Moama had a population of 5,620. History Maiden's Punt The settlement where Moama now stands was founded by James Maiden in the mid-1840s, beginning as a stopping-point for stock and cargo waiting to cross the Murray River by punt. Maiden arrived in the district in 1840; he had been hired to caretake Jeffries' station about from the junction of the Campaspe River and the Murray River. He recognised a business opportunity and travelled to Seymour where he built a punt, which he then transported back to the Murray. Speewa, New South Wales
Speewa is a rural locality in the Riverina District of New South Wales, Australia near the Murray River in Murray River Council local government area. It is connected to the locality of Speewa, Victoria by the Speewa Ferry across the Murray. It is unusual in that it shares its name with a contiguous locality in Victoria; the post office having been based in Victoria from 1924 until 1964, before moving to New South Wales until it closed in 1973. Speewa Island Speewa Creek is an anabranch of the Murray River and at times of greater flow encloses most of the area of Speewa as Speewa Island. Murray Downs is a locality in the Murray River Council, New South Wales, Australia. It is directly across the border from Swan Hill. Moulamein
Moulamein is a small town in New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. At the , Moulamein had a population of 484 . Moulamein is the oldest town in the Riverina. The town is located between Balranald, Hay, Deniliquin and Swan Hill, at the junction of the Edward River and Billabong Creek. The name Moulamein is believed to be derived from a local Aboriginal word meaning "the meeting of the waters". However, another popular theory states it was named after the seaport of Mawlamyine in Myanmar, then known as Moulmein, which was the capital of British Burma at the time. Mathoura
Mathoura is a small town in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. At the , Mathoura had a population of 938. At the 2021 census the population was 1,002. The town's name may be derived from a Yorta Yorta language, Yorta Yorta word for 'windy'. (There is also a city called Mathura in India.) Kyalite is a locality on the Wakool River in the Riverina district of the Australian state of New South Wales. It is part of Balranald Shire and is approximately south west of the state capital Sydney and north west of Melbourne. Kyalite was formerly known as Wakool Crossing.
