Moderators Of The United Church Of Canada
The Moderator of the United Church of Canada is the most senior elected official within the United Church of Canada. He or she may be a lay person or a member of the Order of Ministry and is elected to a three-year term by commissioners attending the church's triannual General Council. The current Moderator is Carmen Lansdowne, who was elected to the office at the 44th General Council in July 2022, and installed on August 7, 2022. Role The Moderator's authority exists by his or her ability to influence the direction of the denomination, rather than any sort of direct power to unilaterally enact changes. United Church Of Canada
The United Church of Canada (UCC; ) is a mainline Protestant denomination that is the largest Protestant Christian denomination in Canada and the second largest Canadian Christian denomination after the Catholic Church in Canada. The United Church was founded in 1925 as a merger of four Protestant denominations with a total combined membership of about 600,000 members: the Methodist Church (Canada), the Congregational church, Congregational Union of Ontario and Quebec, two-thirds of the congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, and the Association of Local Union Churches, a movement predominantly of the three Provinces and territories of Canada, provinces of the Canadian Prairies. Wilfred Lockhart
Wilfred Cornett Lockhart (October 17, 1906 – October 16, 1991) was a Canadian United Church of Canada minister, chaplain and academic administrator. He was the first President of the University of Winnipeg from 1967 to 1971 and was Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 1966 to 1968. Life Lockhart was born in Dundalk, Ontario, on October 17, 1906, to Tom and Harriet Lockhart. In 1926, he moved to Toronto and attended Victoria College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1929. He remained at the University of Toronto to earn his M.A. in 1932. Lockhart married Margaret Armstrong on September 20, 1933, and the couple then moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, where Lockhart attended the University of Edinburgh, and completed his Ph.D. in 1936. During his time in Edinburgh, Lockhart served as the student minister of North Leith Parish Church. Robert Baird "Bob" McClure OOnt FRCS (Edin.) FICS (November 23, 1900 – November 10, 1991) was a Canadian physician, medical missionary to China, Taiwan, Gaza, India, and Borneo, and was also the 23rd Moderator of the United Church of Canada, the first unordained lay person to hold that position. During a very active life, McClure became friends with Soong Mei-ling and Chiang Kai-shek, crossed paths with Norman Bethune, was one of the first men to drive a vehicle along the Burma Road, parachuted into jungle valleys to save downed pilots, was threatened with imprisonment by Canadian prime minister William Lyon MacKenzie King, and was almost summarily executed as a spy by Japanese soldiers. N. Bruce McLeod (born 1930) is a former Moderator of the United Church of Canada (1972–1974). He has a doctorate in preaching from Union Theological Seminary in New York. Once the minister of Bloor Street United Church in downtown Toronto and a frequent columnist in the '' United Church Observer'', as Moderator McLeod practised extensive outreach via television and by ministry in shopping malls and elsewhere in the world beyond traditional congregational worship. He envisioned a United Church of Canada that would become more open and welcoming to new ideas than had previously been the case, and one in which regional sensibilities as to then-current issues such as abortion would be given credibility.
