This is a list of shootings in Sweden, ordered chronologically. Seventeen people were killed by firearms in Sweden in 2011, but by 2017, more than 300 shootings had resulted in 41 deaths and more than 100 people injured. By 2022, that number had risen to 60. * 28 February 1986: Assassination of Olof Palme. Assassination Of Olof Palme
On 28 February 1986, at 23:21 CET (22:21 UTC), Olof Palme, Prime Minister of Sweden, was fatally wounded by a single gunshot while walking home from a cinema with his wife Lisbeth Palme on the central Stockholm street Sveavägen. Lisbeth Palme was slightly wounded by a second shot. The couple did not have bodyguards with them. Christer Pettersson, who had previously been convicted of manslaughter, was convicted of the murder in 1988 after having been identified as the killer by Mrs. Palme. However, on appeal to Svea Court of Appeal, he was acquitted. A petition for a new trial, filed by the prosecutor, was denied by the Supreme Court of Sweden. Pettersson died on 29 September 2004, legally declared not guilty of the Palme assassination. On 10 June 2020, chief prosecutor Krister Petersson, in charge of the investigation, announced his conclusion that Stig Engström, also known as the "Skandia Man", was the most likely suspect. Mattias Flink
Mattias Flink (born 8 March 1970) is a Swedish spree killer who killed seven people on June 11, 1994, in Falun, Sweden. At the time, he was a second lieutenant in the Swedish Army. He was released from prison on 11 June 2014, exactly twenty years after the murders. Early years Flink was born and raised in Falun, Sweden. His mother was a housewife and his father and grandfather worked as gunsmiths with their own shop. At the age of seven Flink joined the Scout Movement. His parents divorced when he was nine years old and the divorce is described as having been calm and sensible. Flink chose to stay with his father in the family house while his mother moved to an apartment just a couple of hundred meters from the house. Tommy Zethraeus
Tommy Zethraeus (born 28 May 1969) is a Swedish mass murderer responsible for the murder of four people outside the restaurant Sturecompagniet at Stureplan, Stockholm on 4 December 1994. After Zethraeus and two of his friends were denied entry at the door to the restaurant, they went home by taxi and returned at about five in the morning. Zethraeus had brought with him a fully automatic Norwegian AG-3 battle rifle and gunned down three women, Katinka Genberg (21), Daniella Josberg (22) and Kristina Oséen (21), and doorman Joakim Jonsson (22). Over twenty other people were injured. He was tried and later sentenced to life imprisonment. Zethraeus applied in 2009 to seek a time frame set for his life sentence, but his application was denied by the court. Keillers Park Murder
The Keillers Park murder is a famous Swedish criminal case. On 23 July 1997, the body of an unknown man was discovered in a park in the city of Gothenburg, in western Sweden. The man, who had been shot twice with a pistol, was identified two days later as Josef ben Meddour (aged 36), a homosexual and Algerian national, who had been living in Sweden for many years. After many months of investigation, the police were able to apprehend the two murderers. They were named as Jon Nödtveidt (aged 22), the frontman of extreme metal band Dissection, and his friend Vlad (aged 20), an Iranian national settled in Sweden. The two men, who confessed to their crime, were eventually sentenced by a court of appeal to ten years of incarceration. Vlad was also a suspect in other murder and assault cases around that time. Malexander Murders
The Malexander murders ( sv, Malexandermorden) were the murders of two police officers, Robert Karlström and Olle Borén, at Malexander, Sweden, on 28 May 1999. The murders were committed after a bank robbery in Kisa earlier that day. Three men were convicted of the crimes, Tony Olsson, Andreas Axelsson and former mercenary Jackie Arklöv. The murders in Malexander were among the most high-profile cases in Sweden. The three perpetrators were active neo-Nazis and the robbery spree before the murders was committed as part of their plan to collect money to fund and create a "revolutionary" Nazi organization. Knutby Murder
The Knutby murder ( sv, Knutbydramat) refers to a murder in the village of Knutby east of Uppsala in Sweden, on January 10, 2004. Murder and arrests At around 04:40 in the morning, 30-year-old IT entrepreneur Daniel Linde was shot in the head and chest and seriously wounded. Two hours later it was discovered that his employee and neighbor Alexandra Fossmo had also been shot and was found dead in her bed. The murdered woman was married to Helge Fossmo, a pastor in a local Pentecostalism, Pentecostal church. Her husband had left with Daniel Linde in the ambulance to the hospital. The following day, 26-year-old Sara Svensson confessed to both shootings. She had worked as a nanny in the pastor's family. 2009–10 Malmö Shootings
The Malmö shootings were a string of attacks by Peter Mangs, a serial shooter lone wolf terrorist, also known as the Laser Man II, in the southern Swedish city of Malmö between December 2009 and October 2010. The shooter apparently targeted people with dark skin and non-Swedish appearance. As of 23 October 2010, as many as 15 shootings were linked to the same suspect. 2015 Gothenburg Pub Shooting
The shootings at the pub Vår Krog & Bar in Gothenburg happened on 18 March 2015. Two unidentified gunmen entered a pub in Gothenburg, Sweden and began firing indiscriminately at people inside the restaurant. The pub, Vår Krog & Bar, is located in the Biskopsgården neighbourhood of Gothenburg on Hisingen, an area that has witnessed gang violence. The shootings are one of the rare times in which an innocent bystander has been killed in criminal rival gang violence in Sweden. The shooters were part of a gang from North Biskopsgården out for revenge. A year after the event, the ''Göteborgs-Posten'' newspaper described the shootings as "one of the most unprecedented crimes of 2015." Sandviken
Sandviken is a locality and the seat of Sandviken Municipality in Gävleborg County, Sweden with 39,234 inhabitants in 2019. Crime In Sweden
Crime in Sweden is defined by the Swedish Penal Code ( sv, Brottsbalken) and in other Swedish laws and statutory instruments. Over the past decades, the number of reported crimes in Sweden has increased slightly. This fact is due to several different factors such as a significant increase in the Swedish population, which naturally results in more crime and convicted criminals, as well as people in general being more likely to report crimes to the authorities. Over the last 10 years the number of crimes per 100,000 inhabitant remained relatively stable. However serious offenses, and gang-related crime, such as lethal violence, sexual offenses and assaults have increased significantly over the past years.
