Mapusa () is a city in North Goa, India. It is situated 13 km north of the state capital of Panaji. The city is the headquarters of Bardez taluka. It is located on the main highway NH-17, linking Mumbai to Kochi. During Portuguese India, the city was known as "Mapuçá". History Mapusa is a small city clustered around the Mount (Alto). The name Mapusa is thought to be derived from the Konkani word for a 'measure' - 'map' and the phrase fill up - 'sa'. Ancient Goan agrarian community had a well established '' Gaunkari'' or Community Farming System, where villages formed associations, worked on community land and shared profits. Mapusa Market
Mapusa Municipal Market (also known as Mapusa Market and Mapusa Friday Market) is a traditional market in Mapusa, North Goa and a major tourist attraction. It was built in 1960, the first planned market in Goa. The market has three blocks with 164 shops, some of which have been sub-divided, so bringing the total to 173. It is open every day, except Sunday; and is particularly popular on Friday mornings. The trade Goan vendors come in from the surrounding villages to sell their locally grown or manufactured wares, such as spices, fruits, jewellery, pottery, chickens, incense and carpets. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by type of goods, with special areas for straw hats, Goan home-made chouriço and the like. Strings of Goan chouriço, spiced and marinated pork sausages, seedless tamarind, or ''amot'' are also traded. Joshua D'Souza
Joshua Peter De Souza (born 12 November 1988) is an Indian politician who was elected to the Goa Legislative Assembly in the by-election in 2019 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. On 22 July 2022 he was elected as the Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly with a majority of 24-12 votes against Siolim Congress MLA Delilah Lobo. Currently, he is the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Mapusa Constituency, National General Secretary of Bharatiya Janta Party Minority Morcha, the Vice Chairman of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) and the Chairman of Mormugao Planning and Development Authority (MPDA). Mapusa River
Mapusa River (Rio de Mapuça) is one of the main tributaries of the River Mandovi in Goa, India. The river originates from the jungles of Dumacem and Amthane, meanders eastward and then southward before it drains itself in the Mandovi river at Penha de France. Mapusa River has separated Corjuem from mainland Aldona. The Assonora River is the main tributary of Mapusa River. ''Bardez'' or ''Bardes'' ( IPA: ) is a ''taluka'' of the North Goa district in the Indian state of Goa. Etymology The name is credited to the Saraswat Brahmin immigrants who emigrated to the Konkan via Magadha plains in northern India. Bardez, or more properly ''bara'' (twelve) ''desh'' (country), means "twelve countries" (or territories). North Goa district is one of the two districts that constitutes the state of Goa, India. The district has an area of , and is bounded by Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra state to the north and by Belgavi district of Karnataka to the east, by South Goa district to the south, and by the Arabian Sea to the west. Saraswat Vidyalaya
Saraswat Vidyalaya is an educational institution located in Khorlim, Mapusa, Goa, India. It was founded as a primary school by the Saraswat Education Society in March 1911, and gave instruction in the Marathi language. The original school building near to Mapusa police station survives and was repurposed as a bank after the school moved to Khorlim. Saraswat Vidyalaya is now a high school with feeder units of pre-primary and primary. Panaji
Panaji (; , , )also known as Panjim, is the capital of the Indian state of Goa and the headquarters of North Goa district. Previously, it was the territorial capital of the former Portuguese India.
