Littorinidae
The Littorinidae are a taxonomic family of over 200 species of sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the clade Littorinimorpha, commonly known as periwinkles and found worldwide. Names In English-speaking countries, gastropod molluscs from other families, such as the Neritidae, are sometimes also commonly known as "winkles" because they are small, round snails that occupy a similar ecological niche. Taxonomy These subfamilies have been recognized in the taxonomy of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005): * Subfamily Littorininae Children, 1834 – synonyms: Echinininae Rosewater, 1972; Tectariinae Rosewater, 1972; Melaraphidae Starobogatov & Sitnikova, 1983 * Subfamily Lacuninae Gray, 1857 – synonyms: Risellidae Kesteven, 1903; Cremnoconchinae Preston, 1915; Bembiciidae Finlay, 1928. * Subfamily Laevilitorininae Reid, 1989 Genera within the family Littorinidae include: ; Littorininae * '' Afrolittorina'' Williams, Reid & Littlewood, 2003 * '' Austrolittorina'' Rosewater, 1970 * '' ...

These snails feed on the thin film of algae, epiphytes, Fungus, fungi, diatoms and leaf Epidermis (botan ...

Cremnoconchus
''Cremnoconchus'' is a genus of small freshwater snails, gastropod mollusks in the otherwise marine family Littorinidae, the winkles or periwinkles.Strong E. E., Gargominy O., Ponder W. F. & Bouchet P. (2008). "Global Diversity of Gastropods (Gastropoda; Mollusca) in Freshwater". '' Hydrobiologia'' 595: 149-166hdl.handle.net. The generic name ''Cremnoconchus'' is from the Greek word κρημνός which means precipice and from the Ancient Greek word κόγχος which means shell. This is the only freshwater genus within the Littorinidae; all other genera belonging to the family are marine. Molecular dating based on fossil records showed that ''Cremnoconchus'' separated from their last marine ancestor around 90 million years ago and have since diversified within the Indian sub-continent. Based on this time of split, it has been postulated that either break-up of Gondwana or fluctuating sea levels might have facilitated their diversification. Based on the current distribution of ...

Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=138135 on 2011-04-15 These small snails live in the tidal zone of rocky shores. Overview In Europe there are about nine species in this genus, one of which is the rough periwinkle, ''Littorina saxatilis'' (Olivi, 1792). Another closely related (supposed) species ''Littorina tenebrosa'' (Montagu 1802) was thought to be distinct because of its different ecological requirements, but current studies have shown that it is not at all clear whether the two are indeed separate species or whether ''L. tenebrosa'' is perhaps merely an ecotype (an ecological form) of ''L. saxatilis''.Gosling, E.M. The order Littorinimorpha contains many gastropod families that were formerly placed in the order Mesogastropoda, as introduced by J. Thiele in his work from 1921. Evidence for this group being monophyletic is scanty. In ...
