Islands Of Iceland
This is a list of islands of Iceland. It includes all islands larger than 1 km2, as well as a number of smaller islands that are considered significant either because they are or used to be inhabited, or for specific historical, geographical or geological reasons. Thousands of other small islands and skerries are found along the coast, especially in Breiðafjörður. The areas of some of these islands may vary comparatively rapidly due to volcanic activity and subsequent action by the sea. In the case of the groups of islands in Breiðafjörður, no area is listed. This is because measurement of the smaller islands is made difficult by a large tidal range of up to six metres. Breiðafjörður
Breiðafjörður (, ''wide fjord'') is a large shallow bay, about wide and long, to the west of Iceland. It separates the region of the Westfjords (Vestfirðir) from the Snæfellsnes peninsula to the south. Breiðafjörður is encircled by mountains, including Kirkjufell and the glacier Snæfellsjökull on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and the Látrabjarg bird cliffs at the tip of the Westfjords. Numerous smaller fjords extend inland from Breiðafjörður, the largest being Hvammsfjörður at its southeastern corner. An interesting feature of the bay is that the land to the north was formed about 15 million years ago, whereas the land to the south was formed less than half that time ago.. Eldey
Eldey () is a small, uninhabited island about off the coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland. Located west-southwest of ReykjavÃk, the island of Eldey covers an area of about , and rises to a height of . Its sheer cliffs are home to large numbers of birds, including one of the largest northern gannet colonies in the world, with around 16,000 pairs. This colony can now be watched live via two webcams that are located on top of the island. Volcanic system The Eldey and Geirfuglasker volcanic systems together form the long Eldey volcanic system on the Reykjanes Ridge. The erupted rocks are from the tholeiitic magma series and picrite basalt. There is not a central volcano, but rather a number of flat-topped, elongated ridges arranged in enechelon fashion. Akureyri
Akureyri (, ) is a town in northern Iceland, the country's fifth most populous Municipalities of Iceland, municipality (under the official name of Akureyrarbær , 'town of Akureyri') and the largest outside the Capital Region (Iceland), Capital Region. The municipality includes the town's neighbourhood at the head of Eyjafjörður and two farther islands: HrÃsey at the mouth of Eyjafjörður and GrÃmsey off the coast. Nicknamed the "Capital of North Iceland", Akureyri is an important port and fishing centre. GrÃmsey
GrÃmsey () is a small Icelandic island, off the north coast of the main island of Iceland, where it straddles the Arctic Circle. GrÃmsey is also known for the puffins and other sea birds which visit the island for breeding. The island is administratively part of the municipality of Akureyri on the mainland; before 2009 it constituted the rural municipality of GrÃmseyjarhreppur . The island's only settlement is SandvÃk . In 2021 GrÃmsey had 57 inhabitants. The island is accessible by regular ferry and air passenger service. Geography GrÃmsey is the northernmost inhabited Icelandic territory; the rapidly disappearing islet of Kolbeinsey lies some farther north, but has never been habitable. Geirfuglasker
Geirfuglasker (, "Great Auk Rock") was a small islet near Reykjanes, Iceland. It was volcanic rock with steep sides except for two landing places. The rough surf around the island usually made it inaccessible to humans, and one of the last refuges for the flightless bird the great auk (which was also called "garefowl" — "geirfugl" in Icelandic language, Icelandic). In a volcanic eruption in 1830 this rock submerged. The surviving great auks moved to a nearby island called Eldey and were wiped out by humans in 1840. Later a new Geirfuglasker appeared on the site. Another island named Geirfuglasker is east of Surtsey in the Vestmannaeyjar. Geirfuglasker (, ), also known as Geirfugladrangur (), or Freykja (), is a small, uninhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. Geirfuglasker is located approximately off Iceland's southwestern coast. The island hosted one of the last known colony of great auks, which thrived given its inaccessibility to humans. Flatey, Skjálfandi
Flatey () is an island on Skjálfandi bay located about from HúsavÃk, in northern Iceland. Its name in Icelandic means "flat island"; its highest point is only about above mean sea level, hence its name. It is long and wide. It is the fifth-largest island around Iceland. The Flateyjardalur coast and Flateyjardalsheiði valley are named after Flatey. History People first settled on Flatey in early historic times, but it never had a large population. The highest number of inhabitants was reached in 1942, when there were 120 people. As other villages and cities nearby grew, it was very difficult for Flatey to compete with them and the inhabitants started to leave the island, with the last remaining resident leaving in 1967. Flatey, Breiðafjörður
Flatey () is an island of the western islands, a cluster of about forty large and small islands and islets located in Breiðafjörður on the northwestern part of Iceland. Flatey and its surrounding islands are, as a creation, believed to have forged from under the weight of a great glacier during the previous Ice age. In terms of size, Flatey is some two kilometers long and about one kilometer wide, of which most is flat land (hence its name, meaning "flat island" in Icelandic language, Icelandic), with scarcely any hills to be found. Population The island has a seasonal habitation; most houses there are occupied only during summer. In winter, the island's total population is five people.
