High-speed Rail In Russia
High-speed rail is emerging in Russia as an increasingly popular means of transport, where it is twice as fast as the regular express trains between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Service development Since June 1963 the Moscow-Leningrad line (ca. 650 kilometers) was serviced by a day train (Avrora) that offered a 5 hr 27 min ride with speed peaking at 160 km/h; faster speeds were not possible with heavy steel carriages and existing bogies. Development of the higher speed passenger railway service in the Soviet Russia started in 1965. First, the track and safety infrastructure was upgraded, then in 1972-1975 new aluminum cars with pneumatic suspension bogies, RT-200 (Russkaya Troyka) were designed by TVZ in Kalinin, Russia. An electric multiple unit or EMU is a multiple-unit train consisting of self-propelled carriages using electricity as the motive power. An EMU requires no separate locomotive, as electric traction motors are incorporated within one or a number of the carriages. An EMU is usually formed of two or more semi-permanently coupled carriages. However, electrically powered single-unit railcars are also generally classed as EMUs. The vast majority of EMUs are passenger trains but versions also exist for carrying mail. EMUs are popular on intercity, commuter, and suburban rail networks around the world due to their fast acceleration and pollution-free operation, and are used on most rapid-transit systems. Being quieter than diesel multiple units (DMUs) and locomotive-hauled trains, EMUs can operate later at night and more frequently without disturbing nearby residents. The Moscow–Saint Petersburg high-speed railway (), also known as VSM-1 () is a high-speed rail line under construction in Russia. History In 2020, Russian Railways reported construction was scheduled to begin in 2021. The estimated travel time was 2 hours 19 minutes, and the length of the line would be 679 km. In November 2021, reports suggested it was likely for the project to be abandoned favouring possible upgrades to the existing Saint Petersburg-Moscow railway. Siemens Velaro is a family of high-speed electric multiple unit trains built by Siemens. It is based on the ICE 3 high-speed trains initially co-manufactured by Siemens and Bombardier Transportation, Bombardier for German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB). In 1994, Deutsche Bahn were the first to order 50 units of the high-speed trains, branded as ''ICE 3'', that would eventually evolve into the Velaro family. Sokol (train)
Sokol (Сокол, Russian language, Russian for "falcon") was a planned high-speed rail, high-speed train in Russia. It was to be a successor of the ER200 for use on the Moscow – Saint Petersburg Railway, Moscow–St. Petersburg mainline, and was designed to operate at a cruising speed of 250 km/h. A prototype was built in 2000 and tested by Russian High Speed Railway Shareholding Co. The Sokol project was cancelled in 2002. Instead of a Sokol-based design, high speed trainsets (named ''Sapsan'') based on the Siemens Velaro were procured from Siemens in Germany. The ''Sapsan'' ( ), also known as Velaro RUS EVS, is a Russian gauge high speed electric express train. The train is a Siemens Velaro model, which in turn is based on the ICE 3M/F high-speed trains manufactured by Siemens Mobility for Russian Railways (RZD). The trains started regular service on the Saint Petersburg–Moscow Railway in December 2009, at a maximum speed of and journey time of four hours between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
