This is a list of governors of the Federal District, Brazil. The Federal District (; ) is one of 27 federative units of Brazil. In its territory is located the federal capital, Brasília, in the interior of the country. Prior to 1960, the former Federal District in its territory had located the city of Rio de Janeiro; when the federal capital was relocated to Brasília, the former federal district became Guanabara State, which after 15 years of autonomy, was merged with Rio de Janeiro State in 1975. Ibaneis Rocha
Ibaneis Rocha Barros Júnior (; born 10 July 1971) is a Brazilian politician, lawyer and the current Governor of the Federal District (Brazil), Governor of the Federal District (Brazil), Federal District. He defeated incumbent governor Rodrigo Rollemberg with 69% of the popular vote. A member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), Rocha is the first Federal District native to serve as its governor. Suspension of duties On 8 January 2023, Brazil Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes temporarily suspended Ibaneis for a period of 90 days from the position of governor after the 2023 invasion of the Brazilian Congress in the federal capital of Brazil for allegations of security flaws. The protests were led by a combination of individuals who support former president Jair Bolsonaro and oppose current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Elmo is a Muppet character on the children's television show ''Sesame Street''. Cristovam Ricardo Cavalcanti Buarque (; born February 20, 1944) is a Brazilian university professor and member of Popular Socialist Party (Brazil), Cidadania.
