The government of the City and County of San Francisco utilizes the "strong mayor" form of mayoral/council government, composed of the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, several elected officers, and numerous other entities. It is the only consolidated city-county in California, and one of only thirteen charter counties of California. The fiscal year 2024–25 city and county budget was approximately $15.9 billion. San Francisco Sheriff's Department
The San Francisco Sheriff's Office (SFSO), officially the City and County of San Francisco Sheriff's Office, is the sheriff's office for the City and County of San Francisco. The current sheriff is Paul Miyamoto. The department has 850 deputized personnel and support staff. The SFSO is a separate organization from the San Francisco Police Department. However, SFSO deputies and SFPD officers have all attended a POST-mandated police academy, and are duly sworn California peace officers. The primary function of the SFSO is to operate the system of county jails where there is an average population of 2,200 inmates, and a number of individuals on supervised release programs. Manohar Raju is an American attorney who has served as Public Defender of San Francisco since 2019. Appointed by Mayor London Breed to replace the late Jeff Adachi, Manohar "Mano" Raju previously served as Deputy Public Defender, and managed the office's Felony Division. Brooke Jenkins
Brooke Jenkins (born 1981/1982) is an American lawyer serving as the 30th district attorney of San Francisco. On July 8, 2022, Jenkins was appointed interim district attorney by Mayor London Breed following the successful recall of Chesa Boudin, for which she actively campaigned and was found to have improperly accessed and shared sensitive information. She was elected in her own right to fill the unexpired term the following November. She would then be elected to a full term in November 2024. Jenkins has been found to have committed two acts of prosecutorial misconduct, and in April 2025, the State Bar of California placed her in a mandatory diversion program after numerous ethics complaints were filed against her. David Sen-Fu Chiu (, born April 2, 1970) is an American politician serving since 2021 as City Attorney of San Francisco. Previously, he served in the California State Assembly as a Democrat representing the state's 17th Assembly District, which encompasses the eastern half of San Francisco. Chiu was Chair of the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee, a position he held from 2016 to 2021, and the former chair of the California Asian & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Ed Lee (politician)
Edwin Mah Lee (May 5, 1952 – December 12, 2017) was an American politician and attorney who served as the 43rd Mayor of San Francisco from 2011 until his death in 2017. Born in Seattle to Chinese American parents, Lee was a member of the Democratic Party. He took office as San Francisco city administrator in 2005 and was appointed on January 11, 2011, by the Board of Supervisors to serve out the remaining term of former mayor Gavin Newsom after Newsom resigned to become Lieutenant Governor of California.
