Godflesh
Godflesh are an English industrial metal band from Birmingham. The group formed in 1982 under the original title O.P.D. (later Fall of Because) but did not release any complete music until 1988 when Justin Broadrick (guitar, vocals, programming) and B. C. Green (bass, programming) renamed the band and decided to use a drum machine for percussion. Melding heavy metal music, heavy metal with industrial music and later with electronic music and dub music, dub, Godflesh's sound is widely regarded as a foundational influence on other industrial metal and post-metal acts and as significant to both experimental metal, experimental and extreme metal. The band signed to Earache Records in the late 1980s and released their debut album ''Streetcleaner'' (1989) to contemporary and lasting acclaim. After the release of their sophomore album ''Pure (Godflesh album), Pure'' (1992) and their major label debut ''Selfless (album), Selfless'' (1994), they started experimenting with live drums as ...

Streetcleaner
''Streetcleaner'' is the debut studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 13 November 1989 through Earache Records and was reissued with a second disc of previously unreleased material on 21 June 2010. The album is widely acclaimed by critics and is often cited as a landmark release in industrial metal; though not the genre's first release, ''Streetcleaner'' helped define what industrial metal would become. Recorded in three distinct sessions and partially refined from pre-Godflesh demos, ''Streetcleaner'' is a weighty, bleak album that blends heavy metal music, heavy metal with industrial music by means of production-emphasised bass, distorted guitar and, most importantly, drum machine, machine percussion. Unlike many metal albums, guitar is employed to create screeching noise rather than discrete riffs, and the drums and bass are louder than is typical. ''Streetcleaner'' was supported by a series of concerts where Godflesh played alongside Napal ...

Justin Broadrick
Justin Karl Michael Broadrick (born 15 August 1969) is an English musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer and a founding member of the band Godflesh, one of the first bands to combine elements of extreme metal and industrial music. Following Godflesh's initial breakup in 2002, Broadrick formed the band Jesu (band), Jesu. He was briefly in the English grindcore band Napalm Death when he was a teenager in the mid-1980s, writing and recording guitar for their debut album, ''Scum (Napalm Death album), Scum''. Broadrick has also maintained a parallel career as a producer, producing records and remixes for groups such as Pantera, Isis (band), Isis, Mogwai and Hydra Head labelmates Pelican (band), Pelican. Since the 1990s he has worked with Kevin Martin as Techno Animal an electronic music project based in a fusion of industrial, dub music, dub, ambient music, ambient and hip hop, which disbanded in 2001 and was reactivated in 2017 under the new name Zonal. ...

Pure (Godflesh Album)
''Pure'' is the second studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 13 April 1992 through Earache Records. Though originally labeled only as industrial metal, the album has since been recognised as one of the earliest post-metal releases. Musically, ''Pure'' is rhythmically mechanical and features harsh guitars, with protracted songs and an abundance of deliberate repetition. Like much of Godflesh's music, it is regarded as particularly heavy and aggressive, and these elements helped it gain critical acclaim. ''Pure'' was supported by the promotional single of and music video for " Mothra", and the 1991 EP '' Cold World'' was recorded in the same sessions as the album. In 2013, Godflesh performed the majority of ''Pure'' live at Roadburn. Despite dissatisfaction with the production quality of the album, Godflesh frontman Justin Broadrick considers it one of the band's most honest releases. In 2012, ''Fact'' ranked ''Pure'' as the 64th best album of ...

Hymns (Godflesh Album)
''Hymns'' is the sixth studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 23 October 2001 through Music for Nations and was the band's final album before breaking up in 2002. In 2010, Godflesh reformed and in 2014 released their comeback album '' A World Lit Only by Fire''. ''Hymns'' had a troubled production and was intended to be distinct departure from Godflesh's intensely regimented industrial sound to something more traditionally hard rock. It was the band's second and final album to feature a live drummer rather than a drum machine. Background and composition Following the under-promoted release of '' Us and Them'' (1999), Godflesh left Earache Records and was without their support for the first time since the band's self-titled debut EP in 1988. Despite already having some ''Hymns'' demos completed, Godflesh had difficulty finding a new label. After being repeatedly turned away, they eventually settled on Music for Nations, a "mainstream" label wh ...

Us And Them (Godflesh Album)
''Us and Them'' is the fifth studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released through Earache Records on 17 May 1999 in Europe and on 8 June 1999 in North America. As with Godflesh's 1997 remix album ''Love and Hate in Dub'', ''Us and Them'' is influenced by breakbeats, drum and bass, oldschool jungle, trip hop and hip hop. Shortly after ''Us and Them's'' release, Godflesh frontman Justin Broadrick admitted that he "hated" the album as it was the expression of an "identity crisis". Years later, he revised his thoughts, saying that his hatred of ''Us and Them'' was "overstated", and that his main issue in the album lies in its more "cringe-worthy moments." Composition and music ''Us and Them'' features a sound similar to ''Songs of Love and Hate''s remix album, ''Love and Hate in Dub'' (1997), driven percussively and relying on thumping drum and bass and hip hop rhythms. AllMusic critic John Bush, who described the record as "heavy grindcore with drum mach ...

Selfless (album)
''Selfless'' is the third studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 26 September 1994 in Europe and on 18 October 1994 through Earache and Columbia Records. Being the band's major-label debut, the record features a more conventional and rock-oriented sound compared to Godflesh's previous releases. It spawned two singles, " Xnoybis" and " Crush My Soul". The music video for the latter was directed by photographer Andres Serrano. At the 2018 Roadburn Festival, ''Selfless'' was performed live in its near entirety for the first time. "Go Spread Your Wings", the album's 23-minute closing track, was substituted with "Messiah" and "Merciless", two songs recorded in the same sessions as ''Selfless''. Background and composition Since ''Selfless'' and its preceding EP '' Merciless'' (1994) saw Godflesh with a major record label, the band was assigned a professional to do final mastering. Bob Ludwig was called in to enhance the pre-existing masters. Go ...

Songs Of Love And Hate (Godflesh Album)
''Songs of Love and Hate'' is the fourth studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. Released on 20 August 1996 through Earache Records, it is the band's first album to feature live drums, played by drummer Bryan Mantia, combining a heavy metal sound with a more pronounced hip-hop influence, toning down the industrial and mechanical elements of previous releases. The cover is a photograph of Cancer Alley, Louisiana. An accompanying dub-inspired remix album, ''Love and Hate in Dub'', was released in 1997. Both records were reissued by Earache in 2009. Music and composition The choice to replace Godflesh's signature drum machines with a combination of sampled loops and live drumming by Bryan Mantia stemmed from Justin Broadrick's growing dissatisfaction with the limitation of mechanical percussion. After initially making ''Songs of Love and Hate'' exclusively with machines, Broadrick decided that there was a lack of dynamic range and groove. About the search for the ...

Paul Neville (musician)
Paul Neville is an underground experimental guitarist and musician from Birmingham, England. He is best known as the second guitarist in the seminal industrial metal band Godflesh on the second half of their Streetcleaner album and on the Slavestate EP as well as a tour member of the band on respective supporting tours, although Neville had been making music with G. C. Green and later, Justin Broadrick, since 1983 in noise outfit Fall of Because; a band that would break up in 1987 and later reform in 1988 at Broadrick’s initiative, now evolved into the industrial noise core that was Godflesh. Neville is noted for his distinctive style, which can be said to be influenced by that of Geordie Walker of Killing Joke, but with an even greater experimental edge and a flair for drawn out improvisation, creating an unusual and original synergy of noise and melody akin to some of the work of Norman Westberg, Justin Broadrick and Robert Hampson. Apart from his work with Fall of Becau ...

Prominent industrial metal acts include Ministry (band), Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Fear Factory, Rammstein, KMFDM, and Godflesh. Industrial metal developed in the late 1980s, as industrial and metal began to fuse into a common genre. Industrial metal did well in the early 1990s, particularly in North America, with the success of groups such as Nine Inch Nails, but its popularity began to fade in the latter half of the 1990s. History Early innovators Though electric guitars had been used by industrial artists since the early days of the genre, archetypal industrial groups such as Throbbing Gristle displayed a strong anti-rock stance. British post-punk band Killing Joke pioneered the crossing over between ...
