César (comics)
''César'', or ''César and Ernestine'', is a Belgian comic strip series by author Maurice Tillieux. It features a cartoonist, César, who has to cope with everyday problems, and Ernestine, his neighbor's daughter, whom he has to look after. He must also put up with his cleaning lady, Églantine, and his neighbor, police officer Petitcarné. The series, first published in '' Spirou'' between 1957 and 1959, was then transferred to '' Le Moustique'' between 1959 and 1966 before the gags appearing in ''Le Moustique'' were republished in ''Spirou'' and its Dutch-language edition ''Robbedoes'' from 1969 to 1973. In parallel, the series was published in four paperback editions, then reissued as a complete series in the 1980s and 90s, as well as in November 2011. Éditions Dupuis S.A. () is a Belgium, Belgian publisher of comic albums and magazines. Based in Marcinelle near Charleroi, Dupuis is mostly famous for its comic comics album, albums and magazines. Initially a French language publisher, it now publishes numerous editions in both the French language and Dutch language, Dutch. Other language editions are mostly licensed to other publishers. Maurice Tillieux
Maurice Tillieux (7 August 1921 – 2 February 1978) was a Belgian writer and comic artist. He is regarded by many as a major figure of post-war Belgian comics. Early life Maurice Tillieux was born in Huy in 1921. At first he studied for the merchant navy, but his career prospects were sunk following the German invasion of Belgium in 1940. ''Spirou'' () is a weekly Belgian comics magazine published by the Dupuis company since April 21, 1938. It is an anthology magazine with new features appearing regularly, containing a mix of short humor strips and serialized features, of which the most popular series would be collected as albums by Dupuis afterwards. History Creation With the success of the weekly magazine '' Le Journal de Mickey'' in France, and the popularity of the weekly '' Adventures of Tintin'' in '' Le Petit Vingtième'', many new comic magazines or youth magazines with comics appeared in France and Belgium in the second half of the 1930s. Gil Jourdan is a Belgian detective comic strip created by Maurice Tillieux. It is a combination of mystery, adventure and humour. Origin and premise In 1956 the Belgian comic magazine '' Héroïc Albums'' ceased publication. ''Felix'', the adventures of a young bespectacled detective written and drawn by Maurice Tillieux, was among the casualties, but returned in '' Spirou'' magazine as ''Gil Jourdan'', though without the glasses. Jourdan made his first appearance in a rather original manner: in issue 962 of ''Spirou'', the bungling police Inspector Crouton takes wisecracking burglar Libellule out of prison in order to proceed to a reconstruction of a theft for which he has been arrested. Libellule is then snatched from right under Crouton's nose by a young man named Gil Jourdan.
