Cândido Tavares
Cândido Coelho Tavares (30 December 1911 – 18 June 1997) was a Portuguese football goalkeeper and manager. With a career spanning over a decade, Tavares represented mainly Casa Pia and Benfica, coaching the latter afterwards and winning a Portuguese Cup. Playing career Born in Seixal, Setúbal District, Tavares started playing with Casa Pia A.C. in 1931 and moved to Lusitano G.C. the following year. In 1935 he returned to his previous club, subsequently signing with S.L. Benfica. At the latter side, Tavares eventually beat competition from Augusto Amaro and Pedro Conceição position, playing all of the league games in his first season, and interchanging with Amaro in his second year. He then had a third spell at Casa Pia, retiring in 1942 at the age of 31 with União Sportiva in Azores. Seixal
Seixal () is a Portuguese city and municipality, located in the district of Setúbal, in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. Its population includes 184,269 inhabitants (2011), in an area of that includes six parishes. It is situated across the Tagus River estuary from Lisbon. Its seat is the city of Seixal, a centre of 31,600 inhabitants situated along the Rio Judeu. The present Mayor is Joaquim Santos, elected by the Unitary Democratic Coalition since September 2013. Ted Smith (footballer, Born 1914)
John Edward Smith (1914 – 1989), was an English footballer who played as full back, and a coach. Smith represented Millwall F.C. in the late 1930s, he then coached Benfica from 1948 to 1952 guiding them to their first international trophy. Career Born 3 September 1914 in Grays, in the Essex county, Smith football career started at Millwall F.C. in 1935, as the ''Lions'' were on Third Division. He was part of the squad that eliminated (2–0) Manchester City on the quarter-finals of the 1936–37 FA Cup, on 6 March 1937, which would be known as one of the historic ''giant-killings'' in the FA Cup. In the next season, Smith helped the club get promoted to the second tier, playing just one season before the War interruption. The Portugal national football team ( pt, Seleção Portuguesa de Futebol) has represented Portugal in international men's football competition since 1921. The national team is controlled by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the governing body for football in Portugal. Portugal's home matches are played at various stadiums throughout Portugal, and its primary training ground and technical headquarters, Cidade do Futebol, is located in Oeiras. The Primeira Liga (; English: Premier League, also written as Liga Portugal 1), also known as Liga Portugal Bwin for sponsorship reasons, is the top level of the Portuguese football league system. Organised and supervised by the Liga Portugal, it is contested by 18 teams since the 2014–15 season, with the three lowest placed teams relegated to the Liga Portugal 2 and replaced by the top-three non-reserve teams from this division. Founded in 1934 as Campeonato da Liga da Primeira Divisão, it was named Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão from 1938 until 1999, when it was changed to its current naming.
