Cytharopsis Butonensis
''Cytharopsis butonensis'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Mangeliidae.WoRMS (2009). Cytharopsis butonensis. In: MolluscaBase (2017). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species aon 2017-04-26/ref> Taxonomy Shuto (1970) referred the Indonesian ''Mangilia butonensis'' Schepman, 1913 which may indeed be an aberrant ''Leiocithara'' Hedley, 1922, although its narrow shape could indicate that M.M. Schepman was closer in ascribing it to the genus ''Mangelia''. Kuroda & Oyama (1971) transferred ''Mangilia butonensis'' to ''Cytharopsis'' Description The length of the shell varies between 12 mm and 20 mm. (Original description) The shell has an elongately fusiform shape, with a high spire and moderately long siphonal canal. It is smooth, shining, pellucid and white. It contains 8 whorl, of which 3½ seem to form a convexly whorled protoconch. Of these the upper 2 are smooth, the rest with crowded axial ribs. The post-nuclear whor ...

Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=511621 on 2023-10-12 Nomenclature G.W. Tryon established the name ''Columbella garretti'' as a replacement name for ''Citharopsis ornata'' Pease, 1868, by Tryon treated as a secondary homonym of ''Columbella ornata'' Ravenel, 1858. Under Art. 59.3 of the ICZN, "A junior secondary homonym replaced before 1961 is permanently invalid unless the substitute name is not in use and the relevant taxa are no longer considered congeneric, in which case the junior homonym is not to be rejected on grounds of that replacement." In the present case, the name ''Columbella garretti'' has not been used as the valid name after Tryon, and Pease and Ravenel's species are not considered to be congeneric. Mangeliidae
Mangeliidae is a monophyletic family of small to medium-sized, predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea. Bouchet, P. (2011). Mangeliidae P. Fischer, 1883. In: MolluscaBase (2016). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=153853 on 2017-02-23Bouchet P. & Rocroi J.-P. (Ed.) (2005). "Classification and nomenclator of gastropod families". '' Malacologia'' 47(1-2). . 397 pp. Prior to 2011, both the subfamilies Mangeliinae and Oenopotinae had been placed in the family Conidae. In 2011, Bouchet, Kantor ''et al'' merged the two subfamilies into one taxon, which they elevated to the rank of family. This was based on anatomical characters and a dataset of molecular sequences of three gene fragments. Mangeliidae is a sister-clade to the family Raphitomidae As with their relatives in the family Conidae, species in the family Mangelidae use potent venoms to catch their prey. Through th ...

Siphonal Canal
The siphonal canal is an anatomical feature of the shells of certain groups of sea snails within the clade Neogastropoda. Some sea marine gastropods have a soft tubular anterior extension of the mantle called a siphon through which water is drawn into the mantle cavity and over the gill and which serves as a chemoreceptor to locate food. Siphonal canals allow for active transport of water to sensory organs inside the shell. Organisms without siphonal canals in their shells rely on passive or diffuse transport or water into their shell. Those with siphonal canals have a direct inhalant stream of water that interacts with sensory organs to detect concentration and direction of a stimulus, such as food or mates. In certain groups of carnivorous snails, where the siphon is particularly long, the structure of the shell has been modified in order to house and protect the soft structure of the siphon. Thus the siphonal canal is a semi-tubular extension of the aperture of the s ...
