Cyril Duprey
Cyril Lucius Duprey OBE (3 March 1897 – 1988) was a Trinidad and Tobago businessman. He founded the Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO, now part of the CL Financial Group) in 1936, the first locally owned insurance company. The company was expanded into the CL Financial Group, which was run for many years by his nephew, Lawrence Duprey. In 1956, Duprey was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and in 1977 he received Trinidad & Tobago's Chaconia Medal (Gold). His nephew is now the chairman of CL Financial. According to some sources, Dupey was known for his personal business mission statement "Give a man value, give a man service and he will support you." In the 1960s, Cyril Dupey became president of the Cooperative Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, president of the Building and Loan Association of Trinidad and Tobago, and a board member of E.B. Saint Joseph, Trinidad And Tobago
St. Joseph was founded in 1592 by Antonio de Berrio and is the oldest town in Trinidad and Tobago. Originally named San José de Oruña, it served as the capital of Spanish Trinidad between 1592 and 1783. In 1595 the place was attacked and held by Sir Walter Raleigh and was used as a base for his exploration of the Orinoco river in search of the fabled city of El Dorado. Soon after his return the place was burnt and sacked. St. Joseph is not an incorporated municipality. It falls within the boundaries of the Tunapuna–Piarco region. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or dame (title), dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Trinity Cross
The Trinity Cross (abbreviated T.C.) was the highest of the National Awards of Trinidad and Tobago, between the years 1969 and 2008. It was awarded for: "distinguished and outstanding service to Trinidad and Tobago. It was awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy, or for gallant conduct." Either nationals or non-nationals were awarded the honour, but no more than five may have been awarded in any year. The President was awarded the Trinity Cross in an '' ex officio'' capacity. The award was first presented in 1969, last conferred in 2005, and was subsequently replaced by The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (abbreviated O.R.T.T.) in the year 2008. CL Financial was the largest privately held conglomerate in Trinidad and Tobago and one of the largest privately held corporations in the entire Caribbean, before the company encountered a major liquidity crisis and subsequent bailout in 2009. Founded as an insurance company, Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO) by Cyril Duprey, it was expanded into a diversified company by his nephew Lawrence Duprey. CL Financial then became one of the largest local conglomerates in the region, encompassing over 65 companies in 32 countries worldwide with total assets exceeding TT$100 billion.
