Cypriot Football Clubs In European Competitions
Cypriot men’s football teams have participated in UEFA competitions since the 1963–64 season. Before that, the Cyprus Football Association joined UEFA in 1962. Cypriot teams have participated in five European competitions: the UEFA Champions League, European Cup/UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League. 16 different Cypriot clubs have participated in at least in one European competition. In the first few decades of participation, Cypriot teams lost by large margins. Later, results began to improve. In 2006 Ethnikos Achna FC, Ethnikos Achnas became joint winner of the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2006 with 11 other teams and In 2008, a Cypriot team, Anorthosis Famagusta FC, qualified for the group stage of a European competition for the first time. Cypriot First Division
The Cypriot First Division (), also known as the Cyprus League by Stoiximan for sponsorship reasons, is a professional association football league in Cyprus and the highest level of the Cypriot football league system. Operated by the Cyprus Football Association, the league is contested by fourteen teams and runs from August to May, with the three lowest-placed teams being relegated to the Cypriot Second Division, and replaced by the top three teams in that division. AEK Larnaca FC
AEK Larnaca FC (, "Athletic Union Kition of Larnaca") is a Cypriot professional football club based in Larnaca. The club was formed in 1994 after a merger of two historical Larnaca clubs, EPA Larnaca and Pezoporikos. The club also has a men's basketball team, a women's volleyball team and a men's futsal team. The club's name comes from the ancient Greek city of Cyprus, Kition, which was located on the site of today's Larnaca. The colours of the club are yellow and green, and their emblem is admiral Kimon, who died at the seafront while defending the city of Kition circa 450 BC, in a fight against the Persians. EPA Larnaca FC
EPA Larnaca (, ''Enosis Pezoporikou Amol'') was a Cypriot football club based in the city of Larnaca. Founded in 1930 with the merge of two local clubs, Pezoporikos and AMOL, the club was a founding member of Cyprus Football Association and participated in the first Cypriot Championship in 1934/35. Few years later, Pezoporikos was re-established. The golden era of the club was in the period 1944–1946, when the team won the Double in two consecutive seasons. In 1970, the club participated in the Greek First National Division, as Cyprus champions. They were also cup winners 5 times. In 1994, they merged with Pezoporikos Larnaca and formed AEK Larnaca FC. Pezoporikos Club Larnaca (, ''Pezoporikos Omilos Larnakas'') was a Cyprus, Cypriot sports club based in Larnaca with association football, football, basketball and volleyball teams. Founded in 1927, the football club joined the Cypriot Championship in 1938, winning it twice as well as one Cypriot Cup. The colours of the club were green and white. In 1994 the club merged with EPA Larnaca FC, EPA Larnaca and they formed AEK Larnaca (). The club also had a basketball and volleyball department and were basketball champions four times and five times cup winners. Olympiakos Nicosia (, ''Olympiakos Lefkosias'') is a Cypriot football club based in Nicosia and competes in the . The club was founded in 1931, and is a founding member of the Cyprus Football Association. The club colors are black and green. Olympiakos' home ground is the new GSP Stadium, which has a 23,000-seat capacity. The 2008–09 UEFA Champions League was the 54th edition of Europe's premier club football tournament and the 17th edition under the current UEFA Champions League format.
