Kvenland
Kvenland, known as ''Cwenland'', ''Qwenland'', ''Kænland'', and similar terms in medieval sources, is an ancient name for an area in Fennoscandia and Scandinavia. Kvenland, in that or nearly that spelling, is known from an Old English account written in the 9th century, which used information provided by Norwegian adventurer and traveler Ohthere, and from Nordic sources, primarily Icelandic. A possible additional source was written in the modern-day area of Norway. All known Nordic sources date from the 12th and 13th centuries. Other possible references to Kvenland by other names and spellings are also discussed here. Old English Orosius A Norwegian adventurer and traveler named Ohthere visited England around 890 CE. Kven Sea
The Kven Sea (''Cwen sea'') is mentioned as the northern border for the ancient Germania in ''The Old English Orosius'', the history of the world published in England in 890 CE with a commission from King Alfred the Great himself. The name Kven sea was probably the same as the Gulf of Finland, although the Gulf of Bothnia has also been suggested. But, in a norwegian source from 1922 "Kvænhavet" (Kven sea) is mentioned as another name (nickname) for the White Sea. Included in ''Orosius'', there is a short mention of the Kven Sea by a Norwegian Viking Ottar, but the Kven Sea is unknown outside ''Orosius''. Kvens (; ; ; ; ) are a Balto-Finnic ethnic group indigenous to the northern regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland and parts of Russia. In 1996, Kvens were granted minority status in Norway, and in 2005 the Kven language was recognized as a minority language in Norway. Name The origin of the name Kven is unclear. There is a theory among some academic groups that due to the discrimination and suppression by the Norwegian authorities the term ''Kven'' became derogatory in the late 19th century. Therefore, many Kvens preferred to be called ''kainulaiset''. But with the revitalization of the Kven culture in the 1970s, Kvens themselves started using the term. However, even in the 1990s there was a debate whether the Norwegian terms , , or (respectively a Finnish person, Finnish, and of Finnish origin) should be used instead. Cwen Language
Kven ( or ; or ; or ; ) is a Finnic language or a group of Finnish dialects spoken in the northernmost parts of Norway by the Kven people. For political and historical reasons, it received the status of a minority language in 2005 within the framework of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. However, it is seen by some as a mutually intelligible dialect of the Finnish language, and grouped together with the Peräpohjola dialects such as Meänkieli, spoken in Torne Valley in Sweden. While it is often considered a dialect in Finland, it is officially recognized as a minority language in Norway and many Kven consider it a separate language. There are about 1,500 to 10,000 known native speakers of this language, most of whom are over the age of 60. Middle-aged speakers tend to have a passing knowledge of the language. Originally named the Society of Cwens, the society was established at the University of Pittsburgh in Fall 1922 as a women's honors society and became a national organization with the 1925 foundation of chapters at Miami University and the University of Missouri. The origin of the name ''Kven'' is unclear. The name appears for the first time in a 9th-century Old English version, written by King Alfred of Wessex, of a work by the Roman author Orosius Paulus Orosius (; born 375/385 – 420 AD), less often Paul Orosius in English, was a Roman priest, historian and theologian, and a student of Augustine of Hippo. It is possible that he was born in '' Bracara Augusta'' (now Braga, Portugal), ..., in the plural form ''Cwenas''. The term is used today by Norwegian Kvens and some Tornedalians. KVEN (1520 AM, "") is a commercial radio station that is licensed to Port Hueneme, California and serves the Ventura County area. The station is owned by Gold Coast Broadcasting and broadcasts a Spanish-language talk/sports format. By day, KVEN has a power of 10,000 watts. With a good radio, it can be heard up and down the Pacific Coast of California, from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Because AM 1520 is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A KOKC in Oklahoma City and WWKB in Buffalo, New York, KVEN drops its power at night to 1,000 watts to reduce interference. It uses a directional antenna at all times. The transmitter is off East Pleasant Valley Road at Dodge Road in Oxnard. It is also heard on 130 watt FM translator K242CW at 96.3 MHz in Oxnard.
