Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is a Class III railroad operating diesel-electric and steam-powered excursion trains between Akron, Ohio and the greater Cleveland, Ohio, Cleveland area, through the scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park. History Formation During the 1860s, as railroad construction across the United States was booming, citizens of the Cuyahoga Valley area expressed their desires for their own railroad. Plans were subsequently made for a rail line to be built through the area, but they were quickly dropped, due to a lack of financial support. The project was then resurrected by the financial support of David L. King, who owned various acres of property in the area. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a List of national parks of the United States, national park of the United States in Ohio that reclaims and preserves the industrial, commercial, and rural landscape along the Cuyahoga River between Akron, Ohio, Akron and Cleveland in Northeast Ohio. The ''Cleveland Night Express'' was an American named train of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) on its route between Baltimore, Maryland, and Cleveland, Ohio, with major station stops in Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The B&O inaugurated the ''Cleveland Night Express'' in 1915. Its discontinuation in 1962 marked the end of B&O passenger service to Cleveland. History The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was chartered in 1827 and grew to be one of the largest passenger railways in the United States, often by acquiring other, smaller railroads. In Cleveland the B&O purchased two local companies, the Cleveland Lorain & Wheeling Railroad and the Cleveland, Terminal & Valley Railway in 1915. Grand Canyon Railway
The Grand Canyon Railway is a heritage railroad which carries passengers between Williams, Arizona, and the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The railroad, built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, was completed on September 17, 1901. The arrival of trains led increased tourism to the area, and the railway company was instrumental in the creation of the Grand Canyon Village to serve guests. Declining ridership due to the increasing usage of the automobile led the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to cease passenger service of the Grand Canyon Railway in July 1968 and freight service on the line ended in 1974. Private investors purchased the line in 1988, restored the facilities, and started running passenger trains again on September 17, 1989. Budd Company
The Budd Company was a 20th-century metal fabricator, a major supplier of body components to the automobile industry, and a manufacturer of stainless steel passenger rail cars, airframes, missile and space vehicles, and various defense products. The company was founded in 1912 in Philadelphia by Edward G. Budd, whose fame came from his development of the first all-steel automobile bodies in 1913, and his company's invention of the " shotweld" technique for joining pieces of stainless steel without damaging its anti-corrosion properties in the 1930s. The Budd Company became part of Budd Thyssen in 1978, and in 1999 a part of ThyssenKrupp Budd. Body and chassis operations were sold to Martinrea International in 2006. Hale Farm and Village is a historic property of the Western Reserve Historical Society in Bath Township, Summit County, Ohio, United States. Grand Trunk Western 4070
Grand Trunk Western No. 4070 is an preserved Canadian National class S 2-8-2, S-3-a class 2-8-2 USRA Light Mikado steam locomotive, built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in December 1918 for the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) as No. 474. It was later re-numbered to 3734 by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, Grand Trunk Western (GTW), after the GTR was absorbed into Canadian National Railway, Canadian National (CN). In the late 1950s, the locomotive received a larger tender from an S-3-c class locomotive, and it was further re-numbered to 4070. In 1960, No. 4070 was retired from revenue service, and it was subsequently sold to Lou Keller, who in turn sold it to the Midwest Railway Preservation Society (MRPS). The MRPS restored the locomotive to operating condition in 1968, and they used it to pull a number of excursions on the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad, and later the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR).
