County Fermanagh
County Fermanagh ( ; ) is one of the thirty-two counties of Ireland, one of the nine counties of Ulster and one of the six counties of Northern Ireland. The county covers an area of 1,691 km2 (653 sq mi) and has a population of 61,805 as of 2011. Enniskillen is the county town and largest in both size and population. Fermanagh is one of four counties of Northern Ireland to have a majority of its population from a Catholic background, according to the 2011 census. Geography Fermanagh is situated in the southwest corner of Northern Ireland. It spans an area of 1,851 km2 (715 sq; mi), accounting for 13.2% of the landmass of Northern Ireland. Nearly a third of the county is covered by lakes and waterways, including Upper and Lower Lough Erne and the River Erne. Forests cover 14% of the landmass (42,000 hectares). Sir John Cole, 1st Baronet
Sir John Cole, 1st Baronet (died 1691) was an Anglo-Irish politician. He was the second son of Sir William Cole (died 1653), a key figure in the Plantation of Ulster, and his second wife Catherine Parsons, daughter of Sir Lawrence Parsons of Birr Castle, Baron of the Court of Exchequer (Ireland) and Anne Malham. William was a Londoner, the only son of Emmanuel Cole, from a family which originated in Devon. Sir Arthur Ingram, the investor, landowner and politician was a cousin through William's mother, Margaret Ingram. John's elder brother Michael was the ancestor of the Earl of Enniskillen. Cole was a Royalist who, as Governor of Enniskillen, had been a prominent promoter of the interests of Charles II of England. Sir Arthur Brooke, 1st Baronet
Sir Arthur Brooke, 1st Baronet PC (Ire) (1726 – 7 March 1785) was an Irish baronet and politician. He was the son of Henry Brooke and his wife Lettice Burton, daughter of Benjamin Burton. Brooke was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1746. He was appointed High Sheriff of Fermanagh in 1752, and became later Governor of County Fermanagh. In 1761, Brooke was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Fermanagh, a seat he held until 1783. Subsequently, he represented Maryborough until his death in 1785. On 3 January 1764, he was created a baronet, of Colebrooke, in the County of Fermanagh and on 15 May 1770, he was invested to the Privy Council of Ireland. Marriages and children On 6 August 1751, he married firstly Margaret Fortescue, daughter of Thomas Fortescue and Elizabeth Hamilton. William Willoughby Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen (1 March 1736 – 22 May 1803), styled The Honourable from 1760 to 1767, then known as Lord Mountflorence to 1776 and as Viscount Enniskillen to 1789, was an Irish peer and politician. Enniskillen was the eldest son of John Cole, 1st Baron Mountflorence of Florence Court, County Fermanagh. Cole represented Enniskillen in the Irish House of Commons from 1761 to 1767, when he succeeded his father as second Baron Mountflorence and took his seat in the Irish House of Lords. In 1776, he was created Viscount Enniskillen and in 1789 he was even further honoured when he was made Earl of Enniskillen. Both these titles are in the Peerage of Ireland. Private life In November 1763 Enniskillen married Anne, daughter of Galbraith Lowry-Corry, MP for Tyrone and sister of Armar Lowry-Corry, 1st Earl Belmore. John Willoughby Cole, 2nd Earl Of Enniskillen
John Willoughby Cole, 2nd Earl of Enniskillen KP (23 March 1768 – 31 March 1840), styled Viscount Cole from 1789 to 1803, was an Irish peer and Member of Parliament. Life Cole was the son of William Willoughby Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen. He succeeded his father to the peerage and the Florence Court estate in 1803. In 1790 and in 1798, he was elected for Sligo and County Fermanagh. Both times, he chose to sit for the latter and represented the constituency in the Irish House of Commons until the Act of Union in 1801. After the Union, Cole was subsequently returned to the British House of Commons for Fermanagh, a seat he held until he succeeded his father to the earldom in 1803. He then sat in the House of Lords as an Irish Representative Peer from 1804 to 1840. He was also Governor of Fermanagh until 1831 and thereafter Lord Lieutenant of the county until his death. ''Custos rotulorum'' (; plural: ''custodes rotulorum''; Latin for "keeper of the rolls", ) is a civic post that is recognised in the United Kingdom (except Scotland) and in Jamaica. England, Wales and Northern Ireland The ''custos rotulorum'' is the keeper of an English, Welsh and Northern Irish county's records and, by virtue of that office, the highest civil officer in the county. The position is now largely ceremonial. The appointment lay with the Lord Chancellor until 1545, but is now exercised by the Crown, under the Royal sign-manual, and is usually held by a person of rank. The appointment has been united with that of the lord-lieutenancy of the county throughout England since 1836. The ''custos rotulorum'' of Lancashire was formerly appointed by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and that of County Durham vested in the Bishop of Durham until the abolition of its palatine rights.
