Curtis Hertel
Curtis Hertel (March 7, 1953 – March 27, 2016) was an American politician. He was the co-speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1993-1994, during the time when the house was split evenly between Republicans and Democrats. He was a Democrat. He shared the speakership with Republican Paul Hillegonds. Hertel held a bachelor's degree from Wayne State University. Hertel was first elected to the State House of Representatives in 1980. His predecessor as speaker of the Michigan House, Lew Dodak, was voted out of office in the 1992 election. In all Hertel served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1980 until 1998. Curtis Hertel's son, Curtis Hertel Jr., was elected to the Michigan State Senate in 2014. His youngest son, Kevin Hertel Kevin Hertel (born May 1985) is an American politician serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 18th district. Kevin Hertel (born May 1985) is an American politician serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 18th district. Elected in 2016, he assumed office in January 2017. Education Hertel attended Michigan State University, where he studied political science. Along with students from each of Michigan's 15 public universities, Hertel managed an effort to advocate for an increase in higher education funding. He continued to stay active in political campaigns and learned firsthand how government should work as an intern for former state Senator Deb Cherry. Dennis Mark Hertel (born December 7, 1948) is an American politician and lawyer from Michigan. From 1981 to 1993, he served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Early life and education Hertel was born in Detroit, Michigan, where he attended the public schools, graduating from Denby High School in 1967. He received a B.A. from Eastern Michigan University in 1971 and a J.D. from Wayne State University in 1974. He was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1975 and commenced practice in Detroit. Political career He served in the Michigan House of Representatives, 1975–1980, representing the 12th district.
