Curse Of 1940
The Curse of 1940, also called Dutton's Curse, was a superstitious explanation for why the National Hockey League's (NHL) New York Rangers did not win the league's championship trophy, the Stanley Cup, from 1940 through 1994. Popular theories The Rangers began play in the season and won a division title in their first season of existence and a Stanley Cup against the Montreal Maroons in their second. They would win two more Cups in and , defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs both times. During the season, the mortgage on the Rangers' home arena, the third Madison Square Garden (built in 1925), was paid off. The management of the Madison Square Garden Corporation then burned the mortgage in the bowl of the Cup. This led some hockey fans to believe that the Cup, which is regarded almost as a sacred object, had been "desecrated", leading the "hockey gods" to place a curse on the Rangers. Original Six
The Original Six () are the teams that composed the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1942 and 1967. The six teams are the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. After serving as the league's only teams for 25 seasons, they were joined by six new franchises in the 1967 NHL expansion. The Six are not the original teams of the NHL. The Canadiens and Maple Leafs are the two members of this group that are charter members ( 1917–18 season) of the NHL. However, in addition to the 25 seasons as the only teams, the Original Six are considered a set for having joined the league by 1926, and thus being the NHL's oldest active franchises by a margin of at least 41 seasons versus any other team. The 1982–83 NHL season was the 66th season of the National Hockey League. The Colorado Rockies relocated to East Rutherford, New Jersey, becoming the New Jersey Devils. Hartford Whalers
The Hartford Whalers were a professional ice hockey team based for most of its 25-year existence in Hartford, Connecticut. The club played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 until 1979, and in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1979 to 1997. Originally based in Boston, they were charter members of the WHA, known as the New England Whalers for all seven seasons. After their second season, the team moved southwest to Hartford in April 1974; five years later, the Whalers joined the NHL in the 1979 NHL–WHA merger and were renamed the "Hartford Whalers" because the Boston Bruins did not want to share a geographical market with the team. Gregory H. Millen (June 25, 1957 – April 7, 2025) was a Canadian hockey commentator-analyst and professional ice hockey goaltender who played 14 seasons for six teams in the National Hockey League (NHL). During his career as a colour commentator, he worked on regional telecasts for the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames, and on national telecasts on ''Hockey Night in Canada'' and the NHL on Sportsnet. Ken McAuley
Kenneth Leslie McAuley (January 9, 1921 – June 18, 1992) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played 96 games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers during the 1943–44 and 1944–45 seasons. Playing career McAuley played for the New York Rangers, who experienced a shortage of players due to the World War II draft. After serving a year in the military, McAuley was signed by the Rangers and played two seasons with the club. With a record of 17–64–15 he was not re-signed following the war. The Rangers opted to rotate Charlie Rayner and Jim Henry in net. While playing in all but 20 minutes of the 1943-44 season, McAuley allowed 310 goals, setting a league record for worst goals against average (6.24) that has stood ever since. Detroit Olympia, also known as Olympia Stadium, was a multi-purpose arena in Detroit. Nicknamed "The Old Red Barn", it was best known as the home of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) from its opening in 1927 to 1979. 1950 Stanley Cup Finals
The 1950 Stanley Cup Finals was contested by the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. It was the Rangers' first appearance in the Finals since their Stanley Cup victory in 1940. This was a rematch of the 1937 Stanley Cup Finals, which the Red Wings won in five games. The Red Wings once again defeated the Rangers, this time in seven games, to mark their franchise's fourth Cup win, and first since 1943.
