Curonian Spit National Park (Lithuania)
Curonian Spit National Park () is one of the five national parks in Lithuania. It was established in 1991 to protect the unique ecosystems of the Curonian Spit and Curonian Lagoon. Curonian Spit National Park is protected by the state, under the Lithuanian law of Protected Areas. Since 1997, it is a member of EUROPARC Federation. Neringa Municipality
Neringa () or Neringa Municipality () is a municipality of Klaipėda County in westernmost Lithuania, comprising several villages in the Curonian Spit. In terms of population, it is the smallest municipality of the country. Nida is the seat of government and largest town in Neringa Municipality. Etymology The name of the city is relatively new and is not found in old scriptures in this form. The name is derived from a German word ''Neringe, Nerunge, Nehrung'' which itself is a derivative of a curonian word ''nerija'' meaning a long peninsular spit. Until the 2000 Lithuanian municipality reform, it was known as Neringa City, although there was never a true "city" there. The Curonian Spit, sometimes called Courish Split (; ), is a long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by Lithuania and Russia. Its southern portion lies within Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia, and its northern within southwestern Klaipėda County of Lithuania. Curonian Lagoon
The Curonian Lagoon (or Bay, Gulf; Prussian: ''Kursjanmari'', , ) is a freshwater lagoon separated from the Baltic Sea by the Curonian Spit. Its surface area is . The Neman River () supplies about 90% of its inflows; its watershed consists of about 100,450 square kilometres in Lithuania and Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast. Curonian Spit National Park () covers the Russian-owned southern 41 km of the 98 km long, curved Curonian Spit – a type of depositional sandbar.
