Algorithmic curation is the selection of online media by recommendation algorithms and personalized searches. Examples include search engine and social media products such as the Twitter feed, Facebook's News Feed, and the Google Personalized Search. Curation algorithms are typically proprietary or "black box", leading to concern about algorithmic bias and the creation of filter bubbles. Ambient awareness (AmA) is a term used by social scientists to describe a form of peripheral social awareness through social media. This awareness is propagated from relatively constant contact with one's friends and colleagues via social networking platforms on the Internet. The term essentially defines the sort of omnipresent knowledge one experiences by being a regular user of these media outlets that allow a constant connection with one's social circle. The social influence bias is an asymmetric herding effect on online social media platforms which makes users overcompensate for negative ratings but amplify positive ones. Driven by the desire to be accepted within a specific group, it surrounds the idea that people alter certain behaviors to be like those of the people within a group.
