Cycling Ireland or CI is the operating name of the national governing body of the sport of cycling in the island of Ireland. Formally the body is a charitable company limited by guarantee, the Irish Cycling Federation. CI is a member of the UCI and the UEC, often called the European Cycling Union. CI is made up of cycling clubs, whose delegates have full voting rights, and whose members can also register individually. There are four provincial associations within CI, to which individual clubs also affiliate: Cycling Connacht, Cycling Leinster, Cycling Munster and Cycling Ulster. Cycle sport is competitive physical activity using bicycles. There are several categories of bicycle racing including road bicycle racing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX, and cycle speedway. Cyclo-cross
Cyclo-cross (cyclocross, CX, cyclo-X or cross) is a form of bicycle racing. Races typically take place in the autumn and winter (the international or "World Cup" season is October–February), and consist of many laps of a short (2.5–3.5 km or 1.5–2 mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction and remount. Races for senior categories are generally between 40 minutes and an hour long, with the distance varying depending on the ground conditions. The sport is strongest in the traditional road cycling countries such as Belgium (Flanders in particular), France and the Netherlands. I BIKE Dublin
I BIKE Dublin is an advocacy group founded in Dublin, Ireland in 2017 and is focused on improving conditions for cycling in Dublin city. The group carries out direct actions to raise awareness of the issues facing people who cycle in Dublin and to pressure the authorities to do more to provide safe conditions for cycling. The group's activities have included People Protected Bike Lanes, Die-ins and slow cycle protests. Activities The first action took place on Andrew's Street, Dublin on 27 June 2017 and involved the protection of a contraflow cycle lane which was a black spot for illegal parking. The action immediately attracted media attention and a follow-up action a week later made the main evening news on national television channel RTÉ. An Post–Chain Reaction () was an Republic of Ireland, Irish-Belgium, Belgian professional cycling team that competed at UCI Continental Circuits, UCI Continental level. The squad was managed by Sean Kelly (cyclist), Sean Kelly and Kurt Bogaerts. It contested one-day and stage races at events across Europe, with riders taking overall victories on the UCI Europe Tour at races including Vuelta a Extremadura in Spain, Rás Tailteann in Ireland and Ronde de l'Oise in France. There were also successes in higher-category races including the one-day Schaal Sels in Belgium and two stage wins at the Tour of Britain. Six elite national road and time trial championships were won by riders contracted to the team. The squad was based in Belgium at the Sean Kelly Academy in the Flanders town of Merchtem. Sport Ireland (), formerly the Irish Sports Council, is a statutory authority that oversees, and partly funds, the development of sport within Ireland. It is located at the National Sports Campus in the townland of Sheephill near Abbotstown House in Dublin. Stephen Roche
Stephen Roche (; born 28 November 1959) is an Irish former professional road racing cyclist. In a 13-year professional career, he peaked in 1987, becoming the second of only three cyclists to win the Triple Crown of victories in the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia general classification, plus the World road race championship, the others being Eddy Merckx and Tadej Pogačar. Roche's rise coincided with that of fellow Irishman Sean Kelly. Although one of the finest cyclists of his generation and admired for his pedalling style, he struggled with knee injuries and never contended in the Grand Tours post-1987. John James 'Sean' Kelly (born 24 May 1956) is an Irish former professional road bicycle racer, one of the most successful road cyclists of the 1980s, and one of the finest Classic cycle races, Classics riders of all time. From becoming a professional in 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he won 193 professional races, including nine Cycling monument, Monument Classics, Paris–Nice a record seven years consecutively and the first UCI Road World Cup in 1989. Kelly won one Grand Tour (cycling), Grand Tour, the 1988 Vuelta a España, and four Points classification in the Tour de France, green jerseys in the Tour de France. Caroline Ryan (born 10 October 1979) is an Irish former rower, and racing cyclist. Biography In 2008, Ryan won the Princess Royal Challenge Cup (the premier women's singles sculls event) at the Henley Royal Regatta, rowing for the Garda Siochana Boat Club. Ryan won the bronze medal in the women's points race at the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, Ireland's first medal at a senior track cycling world championship since Harry Reynolds took gold in 1896 and bronze in 1897. Matt Cooper (born 21 July 1966) is an Irish journalist, author and broadcaster who presents news review show ''The Last Word (radio show), The Last Word'' on Today FM. Cooper is a former editor of the ''Sunday Tribune'' and former business editor of the ''Irish Independent''. He has also done some television work.
