Culinary Specialist (United States Navy)
Culinary Specialist (abbreviated CS) is a United States Navy and United States Coast Guard occupational Naval rating, rating. The Navy rating was created on January 15, 2004 from the Mess Management Specialist (MS) rating. The U.S. Coast Guard replaced its previously named Food Service Specialist (FS) rating with ''Culinary Specialist'' on January 6, 2017 in order to "accurately reflect the culinary skills and professional expertise held by members of the rating". Carl Maxie Brashear (19 January 1931 – 25 July 2006) was a United States Navy sailor. He was a Master Diver, rising to the position in 1970, despite having his lower left leg amputated in 1966. The 2000 film '' Men of Honor'' was based on his life. The United States Coast Guard's ratings are general occupations that consist of specific skills and abilities. Each naval rating, rating has its own specialty badge, which is typically worn on the left sleeve of their service dress uniform by enlisted rank, enlisted personnel in that particular field. A steward's assistant (SA) is an unlicensed, Entry-level job, entry-level crewmember in the Steward's department of a merchant ship. This position can also be referred to as steward (the usual term on British ships), galley utilityman, messman, supply, waiter or General Steward (GS). The role of the steward's assistant consists mainly of stocking, cleaning and assisting with the preparation and serving of meals. The steward's assistant often assists the steward by removing stocks such as food, linen, and utensils and making sure they arrive where they're needed. Closely involved with the storeroom operations, the steward's assistant will assist in taking inventory. The steward's assistant also is typically in charge of the ship's linens, not only sorting, counting, and stocking but also issuing them to the crew. Jack of the dust is an obsolete enlisted rating of the United States Navy and was used in the Navy Supply Corps. The modern U.S. Navy equivalent is Culinary specialist. Chief Cook
A chief cook (often shortened to cook) is a seniormost unlicensed crewmember working in the steward's department of a merchant ship. The chief cook's principal role is to ensure the preparation and serving of meals that are both delicious and nutritious. In addition to directing and participating in the preparation and serving of meals, the chief cook determines timing and sequence of operations required to meet serving times; inspects galley and equipment for cleanliness; and oversees proper storage and preparation of food. The cook may plan or assist in planning meals and taking inventory of stores and equipment. A chief cook's duties may overlap with those of the steward's assistant, the chief steward, and other steward's department crewmembers. John Henry Turpin
John Henry Turpin (August 20, 1876 – March 10, 1962) was an American sailor in the United States Navy who survived the catastrophic explosions of two U.S. Navy ships: in 1898, and in 1905. Turpin was one of the first African Americans to hold the rank of chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy, becoming a chief gunner's mate on the cruiser in 1917. He was transferred to the Fleet Reserve in 1919 and retired in 1925. Early life and career Turpin was born on August 20, 1876, in Long Branch, New Jersey, and enlisted in the United States Navy in New York City on November 4, 1896. Doris Miller
Doris "Dorie" Miller (October 12, 1919November 24, 1943) was a U.S. Navy sailor who was the first black recipient of the Navy Cross and a nominee for the Medal of Honor. As a mess attendant second class aboard the battleship , Miller helped carry wounded sailors to safety during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He then manned an anti-aircraft gun and, despite no prior training in gunnery, officially shot down one plane (according to Navy Department records), but Miller and other eyewitnesses claimed a range of four to six.
