Cuckoo Song (instrumental)
"Cuckoo Song" is a musical piece written by Michael Praetorius (1571 – 1621). In 1977 British musician Mike Oldfield released an arrangement of the piece as a single. The B side, a musical precursor of Incantations and which could almost be a part of it, is an original composition by Oldfield. Les Penning
Les Penning is a British folk musician and composer, best known for his work with Mike Oldfield on the album ''Ommadawn'' and several of Oldfield's singles. He is credited with introducing Oldfield to medieval music through their time playing together at Penrhos Court. He has worked with many other artists, playing woodwind, as producer or as recording engineer, and has created radio drama for BBC Hereford and Worcester and music for two S4C television series: ''Gwyddion'' and an adaption by Gareth Miles of the William John Griffith novel '' Storïau'r Henllys Fawr''.In 1978 he was a musician and performer on the BBC adaption of ‘Kilvert’s Diary’ In 1977 he was given the title of Sir Les Penning, Master of the King's music, to Richard Booth, the King of Hay. Michael Praetorius
Michael Praetorius (probably 28 September 1571 – 15 February 1621) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist. He was one of the most versatile composers of his age, being particularly significant in the development of musical forms based on Protestant hymns. Life Praetorius was born Michael Schultze, the youngest son of a Lutheran pastor, in Creuzburg, in present-day Thuringia. After attending school in Torgau and Zerbst, he studied divinity and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt (Oder). He was fluent in a number of languages. After receiving his musical education, from 1587 he served as organist at the Marienkirche in Frankfurt. From 1592/3 he served at the court in Wolfenbüttel, under the employ of Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. William Tell Overture (Mike Oldfield Single)
"William Tell Overture" is a single by musician Mike Oldfield, released in 1977. It is a rendition of the last movement (''Allegro molto'') from Gioachino Rossini's ''William Tell Overture'', played in a deliberately much slower arrangement than Rossini's original piece. This version of the ''William Tell Overture'' did not have much of an impact on the UK charts. It is the first of the two non-album singles released by Mike Oldfield in 1977. B-sides The UK B-side was "Argiers", which had previously been the European b-side for an earlier Oldfield single "Portsmouth". "Argiers" had been recorded in January 1976 at Througham and features Leslie Penning on recorders. Some European versions included the track "First Excursion" as the B-side, however in Brazil the B-side was "Portsmouth". ''Incantations'' is the fourth studio album by English musician, songwriter, and producer Mike Oldfield, released on 1 December 1978 by Virgin Records. Following the release of his previous album '' Ommadawn'' (1975), Oldfield moved into a new home in Bisley, Gloucestershire, where he set up a new recording studio. He started on a follow-up in 1977 which took form as a double album with one, side-long track on each side of the LP record. Oldfield wished to use real incantations in the music, but ended up using folklore as a loose running theme, such as Dianna the Huntress. Though primarily instrumental, lyrical sections are adapted from works by poets Henry Longfellow and Ben Jonson. Oldfield completed the self-awareness seminar Exegesis while recording ''Incantations''.
