Cryptothecia Albomaculatella
''Cryptothecia albomaculatella'' is a species of corticolous lichen, corticolous (bark-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Arthoniaceae. It is a common lichen species in Thailand, and has also been recorded from Assam, India. Taxonomy It was species description, formally described in 2009 by the lichenologist André Aptroot and the botanist Pat Wolseley. The type (biology), type specimen was collected from Khlong Plou, Kapou Kapiang station (Uthai Thani province). Description Its thallus is up to in diameter and 0.1–0.2 mm thick, and is and pale yellowish in colour. Instead of making discrete sexual reproductive structures like apothecia, this lichen instead has an "ascigerous zone", a region on the thallus where ascus, asci (spore-bearing cells) are located. André Aptroot
André Aptroot ( Heemskerk, 1961) is a Dutch mycologist and lichenologist. His primary research focus is on biodiversity, particularly tropical lichens, encompassing systematics, floristic surveys, and taxonomic reviews. A prolific researcher, he has published more than 500 scientific papers and described hundreds of new fungal and lichen species. Career In 1993 he did his PhD at the University of Utrecht under the supervision of Robbert Gradstein (nl). His dissertation was titled "Systematic studies on pyrenocarpous lichens and related fungi". He specializes in fungi and lichens on which he has several hundreds of publications to his name. He has worked as curator at Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (now Westerdijk Institute). Barbatic acid is an organic compound that is made by some lichens. It is in the structural class known as depsides. It is particularly common in the genera ''Usnea'' (the beard lichens) and ''Cladonia''. History The compound was first isolated in 1880 from the lichen '' Usnea barbata'' by chemists John Stenhouse and Charles Groves. The compound coccellic acid, isolated from '' Cladonia coccifera'', was later shown to be the same compound as barbatic acid. Properties Biosynthetically, barbatic acid is made of two units of orsellinate derivatives that are created by an aromatic synthase enzyme. The repeated action of this enzyme produces an 8-carbon polyketide intermediate that is cyclized.
