Cruelty (film)
''Cruelty'' (russian: Жестокость, Zhestokost) is a 1959 Soviet dramatic film directed by Vladimir Skuybin and written by Pavel Nilin. Synopsis Set in the vicinity of a small Siberian town, the film centers around a brutal gang led by the character Kostya Vorontsov. The local police, assisted by members of the Komsomol, investigate the operations of the gang and attempt to liquidate them. In one of the clashes with the bandits, the deputy head of the investigation, Veniamin Malyshev (a Komsomol member of the Civil War) is seriously wounded. In addition, Vorontsov's assistant Lazar Baukin (a former hunter and a soldier), is captured. Having ascertained during the interrogation that the gangster did not intend to help the policemen, the head of the criminal investigation department proposes to shoot the enemy. Pavel Nilin
Pavel Filippovich Nilin (; 17 January 1908 – 2 October 1981) was a Soviet and Russian writer, screenwriter, journalist and playwright, best known for his novel ''A Man Goes Uphill'' (1936), adapted to the big screen under the title ''A Great Life'', for which he, as a scriptwriter, received the Stalin Prize in 1941. Highly popular was his 1956 novel ''Cruelty''. Biography Nilin was born in Irkutsk, into the family of a political exile. After the 1917 Revolution he worked as a criminal investigation officer in the town of Tulun, Irkutsk oblast, then in 1927 embarked upon the career of a journalist, moving from Siberia first to Povolzhye, then Ukraine and finally Moscow. He debuted as a published author in 1936 with a series of short stories published by the ''Novy Mir'' magazine. Nikolay Gavrilovich Smorchkov (russian: Николай Гаврилович Сморчков; 9 August 1930 – 7 March 2021) was a Soviet and Russian film actor. Biography Nikolay Smorchkov was born on 9 August 1930 in the village of Ivankovo, Gavrilovo-Posadsky District, in a large peasant family named Gavril Ivanovich and Pelageya Matveyevna. In 1933, fleeing Collectivization, the family moved to the village of Orgtrud, which was not far from Vladimir (now the district of the city). Being still in the 7th grade, the future actor caught a movie and decided to become a film actor. After graduation Smorchkov came to Moscow and entered the VGIK (course of Sergei Gerasimov and Tamara Makarova), where he had to deal specially with removing his pronounced accent. Anatoly Lvovich Kubatsky (russian: Анато́лий Льво́вич Куба́цкий) (1 November 1908 – 29 December 2001) was a Soviet stage and film actor. Georgi Aleksandrovich Yumatov ( rus, Гeopгий Алeксандpoвич Юматов, p=ɡʲɪˈorɡʲɪj jʊˈmatəf; 11 March 1926 – 6 October 1997) was a Soviet and Russian film actor. He appeared in 72 films between 1946 and 1994. He was a People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1982). Biography Yumatov was born on 11 March 1926 in Moscow into a Russian family. A veteran of the Great Patriotic War. During 1941—1942 he studied at the Naval School. In 1942 he was enrolled as a cabin boy on the torpedo boat "The Brave", and a year later he became its helmsman. He participated in the siege of Budapest. He distinguished himself in the battle for Vienna in the assault on the bridge. During this battle he was awarded the Medal of Ushakov. He was wounded several times and also shell-shocked. After the war he returned to Moscow and was noticed by Grigori Aleksandrov in a cafe.
