Croydon London Borough Council Election, 2002
Elections to Croydon Council in London, England were held on 4 May 2002. The council was up for election for the first time since the 1998 election. The Labour Party managed to keep control of the council which it had done since 1994 when it took power from the Conservative Party. This year Labour held Croydon with a smaller majority, only clinging onto power through a tiny number of votes in its marginal wards - one councillor won by just eight votes. 37 Labour councillors, 32 Conservative councillors and 1 Liberal Democrat councillor were elected, maintaining Labour control of the Council. Subsequently, one Conservative councillor defected to Labour, defected back to the Conservatives, became an independent and then a Liberal Democrat. 1998 Croydon London Borough Council Election
Elections to Croydon Council in London, England were held on 7 May 1998. The whole council was up for election and the Labour Party stayed in overall control of the council. For the first time in a local election two polling stations were situated in supermarkets. Before the election the council had been seen as a top target for the Conservatives who only needed a small swing of 2 per cent to take control. The Labour party had taken control of the council for the first time in the council's history in the previous election in 1994. The removal of mounted patrols from parks and an increase in nursery places were seen as important issues in the election. Both main parties concentrated on trying to get their vote out and were targeting several key wards. Sarah Jones (politician)
Sarah Ann Jones (born 20 December 1972) is a British Labour Party politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Croydon West, formerly Croydon Central, since 2017 and Minister of State for Industry since July 2024. She was the MP for Croydon Central from the 2017 general election until the seat's abolition in 2024. She previously served as Shadow Minister for Industry and Decarbonisation as part of Labour's Shadow Business and Trade team. Until September 2023, Jones was the Shadow Minister for Policing and the Fire Service. Life and career Jones was born in Croydon and is a lifelong resident. Andrew Pelling
Andrew John Pelling (born 20 August 1959) is a British politician. He was Member of Parliament for Croydon Central from 2005 to 2010, first as a Conservative, then from 2007 as an independent. He contested the seat as an independent at the 2010 general election, but lost to his former party. He was also a councillor in Croydon and a member of the London Assembly. He joined the Labour Party in February 2011 but was subsequently expelled from Labour in February 2022. In early 2024 he joined the Liberal Democrats, and stood unsuccessfully for the party in the 2024 general election. Maria Gatland
Maria Gatland (born Maria McGuire 1948, Dublin, Ireland) is a councillor in the London Borough of Croydon for the Conservative Party, who has represented the South Croydon ward since 2018. From 2002 to 2018 she was a Conservative councillor for the Croham ward. Croham was a ward in the London Borough of Croydon, London in the United Kingdom, covering part of the Croham Hurst and South Croydon. The ward returned three councillors every four years to Croydon Council.
