Croydon, Utah
Croydon is an unincorporated community in northeastern Morgan County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Ogden– Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. Description Accessible from Interstate 84, it is home to Holcim's Devil's Slide Cement Plant and several hundred residents. Lost Creek runs through this small unincorporated town, just northeast of the Devil's Slide rock formation. Cattle and sheep ranches can be found throughout the valley and in the surrounding mountains. Croydon was also home to the annual Widowmaker, hosted by the Wilde family of Croydon Utah, the Widowmaker was a snowmobile and motorcycle hillclimbing event for several years. The Ogden-Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget, is an area consisting of four counties in north central Utah, anchored by the cities of Ogden and Clearfield. As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 547,184. Hillclimbing, also known as hill climbing, speed hillclimbing, or speed hill climbing, is a branch of motorsport in which drivers compete against the clock to complete an uphill course. Widowmaker Hill Climb
The Widowmaker hill climb is an outdoor motorcycle sport event held annually and sometimes semi-annually in Croydon, Utah, United States. It consists of two major professional competitions, the first being the motorcycle hill climb, which is held usually in the month of June of each year. The second competition is the snowmobile hill climb, which is usually held in the month of January. However, there are many more types of sub-competitions held, including competitions for amateur motorcyclist, ATV, and snowmobile riders. The Widowmaker has become a popular event, both on the local riding circuit, and nationally with pro-riders. This has been attributed to the mountain's difficulty level. Even in the highest levels of pro-circuit riders there have been 13 as of March 8, 2009 that have been able to summit the 1000 foot level, over the 6 years that the event has been held. Devil's Slide (Utah)
Devil's Slide is a geological formation located near the border of Wyoming in northern Utah's Weber Canyon, near the community of Croydon in Morgan County, Utah, United States. The Slide consists of two parallel limestone strata that have been tilted to lie vertical, protruding out of the mountainside. Intervening layers have eroded more quickly, forming a channel some wide running hundreds of feet down the mountain. The distance between the two slabs is around 7.6 m. I-84 runs right past Devil's Slide, which can be clearly seen from the road. The Weber River flows between the formation and the freeway. There are parking areas on both sides of the highway for viewing the Slide. Background Devil's Slide was originally discovered by Utah settlers in the 1840s in upper Weber Canyon. Interstate 84 In Utah
Interstate 84 (I-84) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that links Portland, Oregon, to I-80 near Echo, Utah. The segment in the US state of Utah is the shortest of any of the three states the western I-84 passes through and contains the eastern terminus of the highway. I-84 enters Box Elder County near Snowville before becoming concurrent with I-15 in Tremonton. The concurrent highways travel south through Brigham City and Ogden and separate near Ogden-Hinckley Airport. Turing east along the Davis County border, I-84 intersects US Route 89 (US-89) and enters Weber Canyon as well as Morgan County. While in Morgan County, I-84 passes the Devil's Gate-Weber Hydroelectric Power Plant and Devil's Slide rock formation.
