Clifford Smith (director)
Clifford Smith (1894–1937) was an American film director who also occasionally film actor, acted and film producer, produced. He directed over eighty films between 1915 and 1937 as well as several serial film, serials, doing much of his work for Universal Pictures. Primarily a director of western film, westerns he worked with leading genre stars such as William S. Hart. Lost Film
A lost film is a feature film, feature or short film in which the original negative or copies are not known to exist in any studio archive, private collection, or public archive. Films can be wholly or partially lost for a number of reasons. Early films were not thought to have value beyond their theatrical run, so many were discarded afterward. Nitrate film used in early pictures was highly flammable and susceptible to degradation. The Library of Congress began acquiring copies of American films in 1909, but not all were kept. Due to improvements in film technology and recordkeeping, few films produced in the 1950s or beyond have been lost. Rarely, but occasionally, films classified as lost are found in an uncataloged or miscataloged archive or private collection, becoming "rediscovered films". Billie Bennett
Billie Bennett (October 23, 1874 – May 19, 1951) was an American film actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 50 films between 1913 and 1930. She was born in Evansville, Indiana, and died in Los Angeles, California. Author E. J. Fleming writing in his 2004 book, ''The Fixers: Eddie Mannix, Howard Strickling and the MGM Publicity Machine'', states that when she ceased making films at the end of the silent era, she ran a high class bordello in an exclusive part of the Los Angeles area. Bennett's girls were made up to look like movie stars of the period, even undergoing surgical alterations to achieve the illusion. Much of the brothel was sponsored by MGM courting out of town clientele and foreign distributors and exhibitors from around the world. Floyd Taliaferro Alderson (November 13, 1895 – February 10, 1980) was an American film actor who specialized in westerns. After serving in the Great War, he began his career in the era of silent films, when he frequently used the name Wally Wales. Although he transitioned to sound, he was given smaller parts, and used the name Hal Taliaferro. He appeared in more than 220 films between 1921 and 1964. He lived his later life in Montana at his family ranch.
