Evan Jennings Kemp, Jr. (May 5, 1937 – August 12, 1997) was an American disability rights activist who served as chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 1990 to 1993. Biography Kemp was born on May 5, 1937, in New York City and grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He received his B.A. degree from Washington and Lee University in 1959 and his LLB from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1964. Throughout his early life, he had difficulty walking, and he would noticeably lurch when he did so. In 1971, his leg was severely fractured when a garage door slammed down on it, rendering it completely impossible for him to walk and forcing him to use a wheelchair. Kemp served as executive director of the Disability Rights Center from 1980 until 1987, when he was appointed to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) by then-President Ronald Reagan to succeed William Arthur Webb. Sydney Banks (January 6, 1917 – November 14, 2006) was a pioneer Canadian broadcaster and producer. Biography Early days Sydney Banks was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 6, 1917. His parents were English, and Banks and his mother returned to England in 1919, to Cumbria, but they returned to Canada in the late 1920s. After spending a brief time in Chatham, they moved to Toronto, where they lived in Cabbagetown. Banks went first to school at Our Lady of Lourdes, and then to Danforth Tech, but he left school when he was only 14. Career beginnings Banks began his multi-faceted career as a child actor in England. In turn, he became a leading stage director and actor in the 1930s in Canada moving into radio where he earned kudos as an actor and writer. While in England, Banks had done stage work as a child actor, and he then did some radio work for CFRB, as well as getting involved in the Toronto theatre scene. The Canadian Communications Foundation (CCF) is a Canadian nonprofit organization which documents the history of broadcasting in Canada, particularly radio and television. Since 1995, the organization has distributed its collection via an internet website.
