Crooked Streets
''Crooked Streets'' is a 1920 American silent drama spy film directed by Paul Powell and produced by Famous Players–Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is one of star Ethel Clayton's rare surviving silent films with a copy at the Library of Congress. The film is based on a short story, "Dinner at Eight", by Samuel Merwin. Plot As described in a film magazine, Gail Ellis (Clayton) is employed as a secretary by Professor Lawrence Griswold (Fillmore) prior to his departure from San Francisco for Shanghai, ostensibly in that city to purchase some rare vases. In the city she meets with adventures while trying to find the headquarters of the pottery merchants and is saved from molestation by Englishman Rupert O'Dare (Holt), who has to battle a drunken sailor in a boxing ring before the latter will leave her alone. Paul Powell (director)
Paul Mahlon Powell (September 6, 1881 – July 2, 1944) was an American journalist, film director, director, film producer, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Powell was most active during the silent film era and is best known for directing Mary Pickford in ''Pollyanna (1920 film), Pollyanna'' (1920). Career Born in Peoria, Illinois, Powell was one of six children of Charles Henry and Anna Clara Powell (''née'' von Schoenheider). His father was a publisher who founded the ''Peoria Evening Star''. Powell was educated in Peoria and later attended Bradley University, Bradley Polytechnic Institute. After graduation, he worked at his father's newspaper as a typesetter and editor before becoming a reporter. In the early 1900s, Powell worked as a reporter for the ''Chicago Tribune'' and the ''Los Angeles Express (newspaper), Los Angeles Express''. Opium
Opium (or poppy tears, scientific name: ''Lachryma papaveris'') is dried latex obtained from the seed capsules of the opium poppy '' Papaver somniferum''. Approximately 12 percent of opium is made up of the analgesic alkaloid morphine, which is processed chemically to produce heroin and other synthetic opioids for medicinal use and for the illegal drug trade. The latex also contains the closely related opiates codeine and thebaine, and non-analgesic alkaloids such as papaverine and noscapine. The traditional, labor-intensive method of obtaining the latex is to scratch ("score") the immature seed pods (fruits) by hand; the latex leaks out and dries to a sticky yellowish residue that is later scraped off and dehydrated. Josephine Boneparte Crowell (January 11, 1859 – July 27, 1932) was a Canadian film actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 90 films between 1912 and 1929. Biography Crowell was born in Nova Scotia. Crowell debuted in the theater in 1879, and she appeared on Broadway as Mrs. Pitcher in ''Captain Mollhy'' (1902). She began her film acting career in the 1912 film ''The School Teacher and the Waif''. By 1919, she had appeared in 50 films, many of which were film shorts.
