Twitch (service)
Twitch is an American video live-streaming service popular in video game live streaming, video games, including broadcasts of esports competitions. It was introduced in June 2011 as a spin-off of the general-interest streaming platform Justin.tv. Content on the site can be viewed either live or via video on demand. The games shown on Twitch's homepage are listed according to audience preference and include genres such as real-time strategy games, fighting games, racing games, and first-person shooters. Gnome (Dungeons & Dragons)
In the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game, gnomes are one of the core races available for play as player characters. Some speculate that they are closely related to dwarves; however, gnomes are smaller and more tolerant of other races, nature, and magic. Depending on the setting and subrace, they are often skilled with illusion magic or engineering. Gnomes are small humanoids, standing tall. Publication history The gnome is a player character race "often stereotyped as buffoons, illusionists, and mad inventors", and many players play them as intentionally "wacky" or "anachronistic"; a gnome often conforms to the trickster archetype, and is "predisposed towards a 'good' moral alignment". Gnomes were originally introduced to ''Dungeons & Dragons'' as a new alternative to dwarves, elves, and halflings. They were developed from mythology from a number of different sources, originally being a bearded, short race similar to halflings and dwarves. The gnome's niche ...

Druid (Dungeons & Dragons)
The druid is a playable character class in the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. Druids wield nature-themed magic. Druids cast spells like clerics, but unlike them do not have special powers against undead and, in some editions, cannot use metal armor. Druids have a unique ability that allows them to change into various animal forms, and various other qualities that assist them in natural settings. Publication history Creative origins The druid is named for the pre-Christian Celtic priests called druids. In the book ''The Evolution of Fantasy Role-Playing Games'' (2014), Michael Tresca highlighted that "historically, druids did revere trees as nature spirits. ..Zoomorphism was common enough to justify druids transforming into all kinds of animals. ..Conspicuously lacking from Dungeons & Dragons is the role of sacrifices in druidic rituals". Original ''Dungeons & Dragons'' Druids appeared, but not as player characters, in the original ''Greyhawk'' supplement ...

Paladin (Dungeons & Dragons)
The paladin is one of the standard playable character classes in most editions of the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. The paladin is a holy knight, crusading in the name of good and order, and is a divine spellcaster. From 1st through 3rd edition, paladins were required to maintain the Lawful Good alignment. In addition, compared with other classes, the paladin class has one of the most restrictive codes of conduct; further, paladin characters are expected to demonstrate and embody goodness. Failure to maintain a lawful good alignment or adhere to the code of conduct causes paladins to lose their paladin status and many of their special abilities until they are able to atone. With the introduction of the 4th edition of ''D&D'', paladins become champions of a chosen deity instead of just righteous warriors, paladins can be of any alignment, and can no longer fall in disgrace and lose their paladinhood. Publication history Creative origins The development o ...

Rogue (Dungeons & Dragons)
The rogue, formerly known as the thief, is one of the standard playable character classes in most editions of the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. A rogue is a versatile character, capable of sneaky combat and nimble tricks. The rogue is stealthy and dexterous, and in early editions was the only official base class from the '' Player's Handbook'' capable of finding and disarming traps and picking locks. The rogue is also able to use a "sneak attack" ("backstab" in previous editions) against enemies who are caught off-guard or taken by surprise, inflicting extra damage. Publication history Creative origins The abilities of the thief class were drawn from various archetypes from history and myth, but clear debts from modern fantasy literature can be traced to characters such as J.R.R. Tolkien's Bilbo Baggins, Fritz Leiber's The Gray Mouser, and Jack Vance's Cugel the Clever. In his article "Jack Vance and the D&D Game", Gary Gygax stresses the influence t ...

Ranger (Dungeons & Dragons)
The Ranger is one of the standard playable character classes in most editions of the '' Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. Rangers are skilled bushcraftsmen/ woodcraftsmen, and often lived reclusive lives as hermits. Publication history Creative origins The ranger was primarily based on the character Aragorn, and the Rangers of the North of J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth mythos, as warriors who use tracking and other wilderness skills to hunt down their enemies. The ''AD&D'' second edition handbook mentions several other inspirations from myth and legend, such as Robin Hood, Jack the Giant Killer, the huntress Diana, and the Greek hero Orion. Other notable rangers in the literature of ''Dungeons & Dragons'' include Hank from the cartoon series, King Tristan Kendrick from ''Forgotten Realms'', and Ren from ''Pool of Radiance''. Half-elf (Dungeons & Dragons)
The half-elf is a humanoid race in the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game, one of the primary races available for player characters, and play a central role in the narratives of many setting worlds of the game. As the offspring of humans and elves they are known as "half-elves" among humans and in sourcebooks, and as "half-humans" among elves. Creative influences Gary Gygax claimed ''Dungeons & Dragons'' elves draw very little from J. R. R. Tolkien's version of the elf. However, multiple academics have argued that aspects of elves and half-elves in ''Dungeons & Dragons'' are directly traceable to Tolkien's portrayal. Michael J. Tresca, in the book ''The Evolution of Fantasy Role-Playing Games'' (2014), stated that prior to Tolkien's work, "the most modern depiction of elves that would influence the fantasy genre was Lord Dunsany's novel ''The King of Elfland's Daughter'' (1924)" which "firmly establishes that elves can breed with humans (more echoes of half-elve ...

Née
The birth name is the name of the person given upon their birth. The term may be applied to the surname, the given name or to the entire name. Where births are required to be officially registered, the entire name entered onto a births register or birth certificate may by that fact alone become the person's legal name. The assumption in the Western world is often that the name from birth (or perhaps from baptism or ''brit milah'') will persist to adulthood in the normal course of affairs—either throughout life or until marriage. Some possible changes concern middle names, diminutive forms, changes relating to parental status (due to one's parents' divorce or adoption by different parents), and changes related to gender transition. Matters are very different in some cultures in which a birth name is for childhood only, rather than for life. Maiden and married names The terms née (feminine) and né (masculine; both pronounced ; ), Glossary of French expressions in Englis ...

Fighter (Dungeons & Dragons)
The fighter is one of the standard playable character classes in the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. A fighter is a versatile, weapons-oriented warrior who fights using skill, strategy and tactics. Fighter is a generic and broad class; individual fighters have diverse backgrounds and different styles. Publication history ''Dungeons & Dragons'' The "Fighting Man" was one of the three classes in the original ''Dungeons & Dragons'' game; the other two classes were Magic-User and Cleric. Barbarian (Dungeons & Dragons)
The barbarian is a playable character class in the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. The class was introduced in 1985 and went through a number of variations in subsequent editions of the game. Publication history Creative origins The barbarian is based on Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian, Gardner Fox's Kothar and to a lesser extent Fritz Lieber's Fafhrd. An illustration of a barbarian appeared already in the original publication of the original 1974 ''Dungeons & Dragons'' set, drawing inspiration from a panel depicting Nick Fury in ''Strange Tales''. ''Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'' 1st edition The first ''official'' barbarian as a character class was introduced by Gary Gygax in ''Dragon'' #63 (July 1982), as a sub-class of the fighter class. The barbarian later appears in the ''Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'' manual, ''Unearthed Arcana'' in 1985. The barbarian, along with the cavalier, received a revision in ''Dragon'' magazine #148 (August 1989), as th ...
