Crisp County is a County (United States), county located in the Central Georgia, central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the population was 20,128. The county seat is Cordele, Georgia, Cordele. The county was created on August 17, 1905, from Dooly County and named for Georgia Congressman Charles Frederick Crisp. Crisp County comprises the Cordele, GA Micropolitan Statistical Area. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (3.0%) is water. The western two-thirds of Crisp County, bordered on the east by a line from south of Arabi, Georgia, Arabi running northeast, is located in the Middle Flint River (Georgia), Flint River sub-basin of the ACF River Basin (Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin). Arabi is a town in Crisp County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 586. History The first permanent settlement at Arabi was made in 1888. According to tradition, the name "Arabi" was coined after a local surname. The town was chartered in 1891. Cordele, Georgia
Cordele is a city in and the county seat of Crisp County, Georgia, United States. The population was 11,147 at the 2010 census. Cordele calls itself the Watermelon Capital of the World. History Cordele was incorporated on January 1, 1888, and named for Cordelia Hawkins, eldest daughter of Colonel Samuel Hawkins, the president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railway. In November 1864, the area that is now Cordele served as the temporary capital of Georgia. During the last days of the Confederacy, Georgia's war governor Joseph E. Brown used his rural farmhouse to escape the wrath of Sherman's March to the Sea. During that time, the farmhouse, which Brown called "Dooly County Place," served as the official capital for only a few days. It was replaced in 1890 by the Suwanee Hotel, located in what became downtown Cordele. The hotel was destroyed by a fire in late 1994 and was rebuilt. Cordele was founded in 1888 by J.E.D. Charles Frederick Crisp
Charles Frederick Crisp (January 29, 1845 – October 23, 1896) was a United States political figure. A Democrat, he was elected as a congressman from Georgia in 1882, and served until his death in 1896. From 1890 until his death, he led the Democratic Party in the House, as either the speaker of the House or House minority leader. He was the father of Charles R. Crisp who also served in Congress. Biography Crisp was born in Sheffield, England on January 29, 1845. Later that year, his parents immigrated to the United States and settled in Georgia where he attended the common schools of Savannah and Macon, Georgia. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, he was temporarily residing in Luray, Virginia, with his parents, who were in the middle of a Shakespearean play tour. He enlisted in a local unit, the "Page Volunteers" of Company K, 10th Virginia Infantry, and was commissioned lieutenant. U.S. Route 280 (US 280) is a spur of U.S. Highway 80. It currently runs for 392 miles (631 km) from Blichton, Georgia at US 80 to Birmingham, Alabama at I-20/ I-59. For much of its route, US 280 travels through rural areas and smaller cities in southern Georgia and east central Alabama. Once the highway approaches Birmingham, it is a major suburban route. State Route 90 (SR 90) is a state highway that travels southeast-to-northwest through portions of Atkinson, Coffee, Irwin, Ben Hill, Turner, Wilcox, Crisp, Dooly, Macon, Taylor, and Talbot counties in the south-central and west-central parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. State Route 33 (SR 33) is an state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of Thomas, Brooks, Colquitt, Worth, and Crisp counties in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia.
