''The Chronicle'' is a weekly newspaper serving the Southern Willamette Valley in Lane County, Oregon, United States. Its area of coverage includes Springfield, Creswell, Cottage Grove and Pleasant Hill. History Formerly ''The Creswell Chronicle'', which was established in 1909, it is the oldest locally owned newspaper in the area. The name changed to ''The Chronicle'' on August 29, 2019 when it expanded its coverage area. Its newsroom and advertising headquarters is located in Springfield. On March 1, 2019, the paper came under the ownership of Noel Nash and his wife, Denise, under Nash Publishing Group. Former newspaper publishers have included SJ Olson Publications, Hollyer, Sittser and Hunt, and Hakes. A weekly newspaper is a general-news or Current affairs (news format), current affairs publication that is issued once or twice a week in a wide variety broadsheet, magazine, and electronic publishing, digital formats. Similarly, a biweekly newspaper is published once every two weeks. Willamette Valley
The Willamette Valley ( ) is a long valley in Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The Willamette River flows the entire length of the valley and is surrounded by mountains on three sides: the Cascade Range to the east, the Oregon Coast Range to the west, and the Calapooya Mountains to the south. Lane County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 382,971, making it the fourth-most populous county in Oregon. The county seat is Eugene. Springfield is a city in Lane County, Oregon, United States. Located in the Southern Willamette Valley, it is within the Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Separated from Eugene to the west, mainly by Interstate 5, Springfield is the second-most populous city in the metropolitan area after Eugene. As of the 2010 census, the city has a total population of 59,403. The Briggs family first settled the Springfield area, arriving in 1848. The community was incorporated as a city in 1885. Cottage Grove, Oregon
Cottage Grove is a city in Lane County, Oregon, United States. Its population was 10,643 at the 2020 census. It is the third largest city in Lane County. It is on Interstate 5, Oregon Route 99, and the main Willamette Valley line of the CORP railroad. History Cottage Grove post office was established in 1855 east of present-day Creswell. It was named by its first postmaster, G. C. Pearce, whose home was in an oak grove. In 1861, the office was moved to the present site of Saginaw; then in the late 1860s, to the southwestern-most part of present-day Cottage Grove, on the west bank of the Coast Fork Willamette River. When the Southern Pacific railroad was built through the area in the 1870s, Cottage Grove station was placed more than half a mile northeast of the post office, on the river's east side. Pleasant Hill, Oregon
Pleasant Hill is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. History Pleasant Hill was the first white settlement in Lane County when Elijah Bristow settled in 1846. He was the first of a party of four immigrants to settle, most recently from California. Also in the party was Eugene Skinner, Captain Felix Scott, and William Dodson. Dodson and Scott took up adjacent claims, Dodson to the southeast and Scott to the west of Bristow's claim. Scott later abandoned and claimed opposite the mouth of the Mohawk River, some north of his previous claim. Skinner made his claim at what is now Eugene. Pleasant Hill has survived numerous house fires and light flooding in lower areas, but the most remembered flood was in 1996. The flooding resulted in no deaths but many homes were destroyed.
