Crestwood Curling Club
The Crestwood Curling Club is a curling club located in the Crestwood neighbourhood of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The club was founded in 1954 on the location of Crestwood Park in west Edmonton. On February 16, 1955 the club opened its doors, and its first feature game involved Brier champion Matt Baldwin take on Ole Olson. New additions to the club would be added in 1964. A new ice plant was added in 1981, and the club was renovated in 2004. In 2010, the club switched from a sand base to a concrete base. The club has six sheets, and the rock colours are red and blue. Champions The Crestwood Curling Club boasts two provincial men's, four provincial women's champion rinks, and two national women's championship teams. Skip Tom Reed, Kevin Byrne, Tony Rankel and Lorne Reed would win the Crestwood's first men's provincial championship. That team would go on to have a 6–5 record at the 1977 Macdonald Brier. 1979 Macdonald Brier
The 1979 Macdonald Brier, Canada's national men's curling championship was held from March 4 to March 10 at the Ottawa Civic Centre in Ottawa. Manitoba's Barry Fry won his only Brier title of his career. He clinched the Brier title following the Friday night (March 9) draw. The rink which also included Bill Carey, Gordon Sparkes and Bryan Wood would go on to represent Canada at the 1979 Air Canada Silver Broom, the World Curling Championships. It would be the last Brier under the sponsorship of Macdonald Tobacco. This marked an end of an era, as Macdonald Tobacco had sponsored the event since the first Brier in 1927. Christine Jurgenson
Christine "Chris" Jurgenson ( Bodogh; born c. 1953) is a Canadian curler from British Columbia. She is a former World Champion, and was lead for the championship team at the World Senior Curling Championship in 2009 and skip for the 2011 World Senior Curling Championships . Jurgenson grew up in Ontario, where she played with her sister, Marilyn Bodogh. She won her first provincial title in 1980. She skipped Ontario to a 7–5 record at the 1980 Canadian Ladies Curling Association Championship. In 1983, she played in Alberta, and made her second national championship, playing second for Cathy Shaw. At the 1983 Scott Tournament of Hearts, the team lost 5–4 to Nova Scotia, skipped by Penny LaRocque. In 1986, she was back playing with her sister in Ontario, playing second for her. Dame Karen Elisabeth Dind Jones (born 29 July 1956) is a British business executive. Life and career Jones was educated at the University of East Anglia (BA, 1978) and went on to study at Wellesley College, Massachusetts. She co-founded, and subsequently floated, The Pelican Group Plc, owner of a number of restaurant chains including Café Rouge. Cathy Shaw
Catherine "Cathy" Shaw (née Pidzarko; born c. 1953) is a Canadian curler, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. While attending Miles Macdonell Collegiate, Shaw and her twin sister, Chris won three straight provincial junior championships (1972–1974) and won two Canadian Junior Curling Championships (1972 & 1974). Shaw played third on the team that was skipped by her sister. In 1978, Shaw skipped a team which included her sister at third, Iris Armstrong at second and Patti Vande at lead which won the Manitoba Lassie provincial championship and then won the 1978 Macdonald Lassies Championship, the national women's curling championship at the time. Shaw moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and won the territorial championship in 1980 playing with Donna Alexander, Lee Brooks and Marilyn Paradis.
